When Karan Johar opened up about Jaya Bachchan's brutal movie review to a filmmaker; 'no matter what anyone says to you...'

As a lifestyle expert with a deep appreciation for the rich tapestry of Bollywood, I find myself consistently captivated by the enigmatic persona of Jaya Bachchan. Her unique blend of grace, resilience, and unapologetic candor has always intrigued me, making her an enduring icon in Indian cinema.

Veteran actress Jaya Bachchan is recognized for her frank demeanor and has no qualms about sharing her views openly. An illustration of this came to light when she candidly informed Karan Johar about a director and their movie, stating that despite what others might say, they had created a truly poor film.

In a recent chat on Koffee with Karan, I had the pleasure of discussing Jaya Bachchan with Abhishek and Shweta. I expressed my admiration for her unique spirit within the industry, remarking that she doesn’t shy away from speaking her mind. During our conversation, I recalled an instance where she candidly told a filmmaker (whose name I won’t disclose) that despite all criticisms, they had indeed made a less-than-stellar movie.

In terms of her work, Jaya’s latest role was in Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, where she played the stern matriarch of a wealthy business family who’s tough to impress. However, it should be noted that Karan emphasized that this character, Dhanlakshmi Randhawa, does not mirror her true personality off-screen.

In a past conversation with Mid Day, Johar pointed out that Jaya, whom he fondly refers to as “Aunty J,” is unlike her public image. He described her as one of the kindest, warmest, and most generous individuals he has encountered. If you asked his crew who their favorite person on set was, they would all agree it’s Jaya Bachchan.

Karan made a note of learning not just the names, but also personal details about each of the 14 assistant directors, as well as their families. When she saw a team member putting in excessive effort, she’d often provide them with samosas, sweets, or even bring a cake to the set, which won her admiration from everyone.

Karan pointed out that Jaya strongly dislikes intrusions into her personal life, yet this doesn’t mean she dislikes photographers or paparazzi. Furthermore, he mentioned that she is quite different from her on-screen character in movies.

As a lifestyle expert, I’d put it this way: I suggested a unique opportunity for her, one that deviated from her past performances. You see, she has always shone as the adored mother or the blameless damsel, and I wanted to challenge that by casting her in a role with complex moral undertones, or perhaps even an antagonist part. It’s all about stepping out of comfort zones and showcasing versatility.
