Colin Farrell Defends the Most Hated Batman Movies

As a seasoned moviegoer who has witnessed the evolution of Batman on the silver screen, I wholeheartedly support Colin Farrell‘s admiration for Joel Schumacher’s distinctive take on Gotham City and its caped crusader. Growing up with the iconic Tim Burton films, it was refreshing to see a more vibrant and colorful interpretation of Batman in Schumacher’s movies.

Colin Farrell, starring as The Penguin, has shown his appreciation for films that some consider unconventional, expressing his fondness for Joel Schumacher’s controversial Batman movies, Batman Forever and Batman & Robin. Currently, Farrell is captivating audiences with his portrayal of Oz Cobb in The Penguin, offering a more grounded interpretation of the character seen in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns. Interestingly, while co-star Cristin Milioti (who plays Sofia Falcone) has publicly expressed her admiration for Batman Returns, Farrell leans towards the more flamboyant side when it comes to his Batman preferences.

In an interview with Variety featuring Milioti, Feliz, and O’Connell from The Penguin cast, Farrell expressed his deep affection for Joel Schumacher’s unconventional portrayal of Gotham City and Batman’s rogues in his movies. While Tim Burton played a significant role in reinventing Batman on the silver screen, Schumacher’s films were partly responsible for damaging Batman’s reputation and financial success until Christopher Nolan rescued the franchise with Batman Begins. Despite the negative feedback and public opinion about Schumacher’s movies, Farrell remains fond of “the over-the-top spectacle of Joel Schumacher’s Batmans. I genuinely enjoy them.” He further added:

“I truly appreciate these items. I can understand why they received criticism initially, and it’s clear to me that Joel put in a lot of effort.

However, Farrell doesn’t limit his preferences to just Schumacher’s Batman films. In fact, as The Penguin himself has shown, he admires various interpretations of Gotham City on the big screen. This appreciation ranges from the gritty and realistic, all the way to the utterly absurd. He further added:

“There’s a lot of nostalgia for me around Tim Burton’s ones. And then what Chris Nolan and his team did were extraordinary as well. [Batman] survived multiple iterations. And they’re all so remarkably different.”

Why Are Joel Schumacker’s Batman Movies Hated?

It’s quite understandable to find humor in imagining George Clooney ice skating as Batman in Gotham, complete with a rubber-nippled Batsuit and using a Bat-credit card. However, for those who experienced Joel Schumacher’s Batman films like ‘Batman Forever’ and particularly ‘Batman & Robin’ when they first came out, Schumacher was not exactly the most beloved figure among DC comic fans, given their high expectations and the eventual success of Christopher Nolan and Matt Reeves in the Batman cinematic universe.

In 1995, the movie “Batman Forever” was released, with Val Kilmer portraying Bruce Wayne. This film marked the debut of Jim Carrey’s quirky Riddler character, years before Paul Dano would embody the role and send shivers down viewers’ spines with his mask and artistic lattes. The movie received mixed feedback but was a massive hit at the box office, earning the second-highest domestic gross in 1995, just below “Toy Story.” However, the success of director Antoine Fuqua’s work (Fuqua also directed episodes of “House of Cards”) began to crumble when George Clooney took on the role in “Batman & Robin,” leading to its eventual downfall.

As a cinephile reflecting on a cinematic journey, let me share my thoughts on the 1997 film “Batman & Robin,” starring Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy and Arnold Schwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze. This adaptation, which reimagined one of Batman’s most tragic villains into a campy super-criminal, is often associated with the version of Batman portrayed by George Clooney, a role that has been met with widespread disdain and remains controversial to this day.
