Will Grey’s Anatomy Feature Steamier Storylines After Landing In New Timeslot? The Showrunner Shares Thoughts

As a longtime fan of Grey’s Anatomy, I’ve witnessed the rollercoaster ride of love, loss, and miraculous medical breakthroughs that have kept us hooked for 21 seasons. The show has been a staple in my life, much like my favorite coffee mug or my trusty pair of worn-in jeans.

As a dedicated fan of Grey’s Anatomy, I was thrilled last week when the schedule for its 21st season landed in 2024. The upcoming drama looks intense, with the interns’ romantic entanglements, the reappearance of more than one familiar face from our past, and a shocking secret brewing between Meredith Grey and Catherine Fox. It was quite a dramatic start to its 10 p.m. slot debut, moving an hour later on Thursdays to make room for another ABC medical drama, Doctor Odyssey. Could this shift mean we’re in for some seriously heated storylines? The showrunner Meg Marinis certainly seems to think so.

Ever since its debut in 2005, “Grey’s Anatomy” has usually aired during the 8 or 9 PM Eastern Time slot. However, this season, the show has been moved to 10 PM, which might provide the writers with more creative freedom to intensify the romantic entanglements at the hospital, as networks often permit more explicit content later in the evening. When asked if the show would explore these possibilities, Meg Marinis replied to The Hollywood Reporter:

This is our inaugural year airing at 10 p.m., and I’m eager to explore the limits as much as they’ll allow. However, it’s important to note that the essence of our show remains unchanged. If we can incorporate slightly provocative themes or heated sequences, we will, but not solely for the purpose of a time slot. As Grey’s Anatomy, our audience is accustomed to finding us wherever we are.

Meg Marinis, the showrunner, seems quite certain in her response, but it doesn’t explicitly confirm or deny a potential increase in provocative content on Grey’s Anatomy. Given that the series has maintained its audience for 21 seasons, she appears unwilling to change it drastically just for the sake of alteration. Change isn’t always synonymous with progress, as one should remember.

To put it simply, the ABC medical drama has always been bold and innovative, tackling diverse topics fearlessly, including those related to romantic encounters. This season, I’m looking forward to possibly witnessing more intense romance scenes, but rest assured, the show’s core essence won’t be altered in any way.

In the upcoming time slot, it could benefit the interns since Jules Millin and Mika Yasuda, portrayed by Adelaide Kane and Midori Francis, deepened their relationship from last season’s flirtation with a kiss that undoubtedly heated up viewing rooms nationwide. Simone Griffith, played by Alexis Floyd, and Lucas Adams, portrayed by Niko Terho, seem to have reconciled as well, as Lucas declined a job offer in Chicago.

In another part of the same episode, it was revealed to Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) that Catherine Fox’s (Debbie Allen) cancer had progressed significantly. The CEO of the Fox Foundation threatened Dr. Grey into concealing this information from her husband and child.

Discussing Jackson Avery, Jesse Williams made an appearance in the Season 21 opener, and I’m eager to find out if he’ll show up again and how frequently, as well as whether he might reprise his role with April Kepner (Sarah Drew) by his side! Kali Rocha has returned for the first time since Season 4, playing Sydney Heron, and fans saw Ben Warren (Jason George) come back to Grey’s Anatomy after Station 19 was discontinued due to TV cancellations in 2024.

“Tune in at 10 p.m. Eastern Time every Thursday on ABC to catch Meg Marinis utilizing her late-night slot. If you’re looking for a great series to binge, Grey’s Anatomy is an excellent choice on Netflix currently, but only Season 21 episodes can be streamed with a Hulu subscription.
