As a gamer who’s spent countless hours rewatching “Friends” episodes, I must say that the behind-the-scenes tales of this iconic sitcom never cease to amaze me. It’s like uncovering hidden Easter eggs in a game you thought you knew inside out!
It’s pretty amazing to me that after 30 years of being obsessed with Friends, there continue to be bits of trivia and behind-the-scenes antics I haven’t heard. As one of the best sitcoms of all time, Friends delivered hundreds of laughs over the course of a decade, but the stories behind many of those scenes are often just as hilarious. Take “The One Where Ross Got High.” I just learned the full story behind the filming of that Thanksgiving trifle scene, and what Matt LeBlanc actually ate was so much worse than Rachel’s dessert.
Joey Tribbiani, played by Matt LeBlanc, often made humorous food-related remarks during Friends’ airing on NBC. However, one of the most striking scenes occurred in Season 6 when Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) unintentionally combined two dishes to create a dessert that was half English trifle, half Shepherd’s pie. In an interview on The Graham Norton Show, Matt LeBlanc discussed this scene, setting up the part where the group tried to hide Rachel’s mistake regarding the dessert. Reminiscing about the event, he said:
Ross indicates he doesn’t like something, which Rachel overhears and finds upsetting, but he doesn’t want to cause her pain. So, he pretends to enjoy it by saying it’s delicious and eats a good portion of it. However, the serving is too large, making it difficult for him to finish. As he struggles, he starts laughing.
It’s worth mentioning that while David Schwimmer, along with two beloved secondary characters from Friends, Jack and Judy Gellar, were not consuming a dish of beef and custard as it appears in the show, according to Matt LeBlanc, they were mainly eating whipped cream and bananas. Personally, I’d choose a plate of jam-covered peas and onions any day over what unfolded next, as LeBlanc went on to explain further.
While we were both eating, he seemed to spit some of his food back onto his own plate. I was sitting next to him but facing away, so I didn’t actually witness this action. Later on, I asked for his plate, scraped a bit of it onto mine, suggested we try again, and continued eating. Throughout the entire incident, no one seemed to comment or react to what happened.
Instead of consuming a meal that included both a salty dish and a sugary dessert, Matt LeBlanc was eating bananas and whipped cream which had previously been in David Schwimmer’s mouth.

It’s incredibly disgusting, and astonishingly, no one spoke up or challenged LeBlanc about it at the time. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your perspective), they remained silent. He only discovered the truth much later on.
Matt LeBlanc later mentioned that the incident was added to the Season 6 blooper reel (a bonus feature on the DVD collection). It wasn’t until they screened it at the wrap party that he fully understood he had ended up dealing with more of David Schwimmer’s leftovers than he initially anticipated.
Oh dear, there are countless stories about “Friends” that have surfaced over time, but none of them make me feel quite as queasy as this supposed background tale.
