Mel Gibson Raves About The Current Lethal Weapon 5 Script, But His Update On The Sequel Has Me Completely Bummed Out

As a lifelong fan of action movies, I’ve seen my fair share of sequels that left more to be desired than delivered. However, the prospect of a new Lethal Weapon movie has me feeling a mix of excitement and skepticism. On one hand, Mel Gibson’s claim that this script is the best in the series piques my interest, especially considering the chemistry between Riggs and Murtaugh. On the other hand, I can’t help but wonder if age will play a factor and whether we’ll see a more dramatic take on these iconic characters.

It seems like we’re past the point where we can revisit the excitement of Lethal Weapon sequels. The initial action-thriller catapulted Mel Gibson and Danny Glover into the realm of iconic Hollywood action stars, and it led to three follow-ups that expanded the franchise with actors like Joe Pesci, Rene Russo, Chris Rock, and others. For quite some time now, there have been rumors about a Lethal Weapon 5, with Gibson even suggesting he might direct after the passing of original director Richard Donner in 2021. However, Gibson recently shared an update on Lethal Weapon 5 that offers both encouraging and disappointing news…

It seems director Mel Gibson is making a resurgence in Hollywood after a period of direct-to-video releases. His reputation took a hit due to off-screen controversies, but he’s now attempting a comeback within the industry. Currently, he’s the director of the movie “Flight Risk,” starring Mark Wahlberg. There are whispers that he might direct “The Passion of the Christ 2.” Recently, at FanX in Salt Lake City, Gibson was asked about the progress of “Lethal Weapon 5.” In response, via ABC4, he shared his thoughts on the project.

Number five has been penned down, and it’s intriguing. However, it keeps getting delayed due to various reasons. As always, there seem to be obstacles with such projects. In my opinion, it’s the finest of the entire series, but for some reason or another, it never seems to get produced. I honestly can’t articulate why this is the case.

It seems there’s quite a bit to discuss here! To put it simply, I find the original “Lethal Weapon” among the greatest action-comedies ever produced, and its follow-up, “Lethal Weapon 2,” one of the best sequels period. This is largely due to the exceptional chemistry between Mel Gibson and Danny Glover as Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh – an unusual pairing of cops who eventually develop a strong brotherly bond despite their differences. As for the “Lethal Weapon” franchise, I’m not convinced another installment is necessary. On the other hand, I can’t help but feel sorry for the misstep that was “A Good Day to Die Hard,” the fifth film in the “Die Hard” series, which unfortunately fails to live up to the Die Hard standard and is considered one of the worst sequels in existence.

hearing Gibson label this script as “the finest of the entire series” certainly piques my interest. It’s not a novice filmmaker seeking to generate hype for their debut project. Instead, it’s Mel Gibson discussing what appears to be another installment, which many might not have anticipated. Yet, he believes it could surpass all other entries in the series.

For years, there have been whispers about reviving the iconic “Lethal Weapon” franchise. If they were to create it now, they’d undoubtedly need to acknowledge that Danny Glover and Mel Gibson are in their late 60s and early 70s respectively. Instead of relying on the humor-driven action that marked parts three and four, a narrative focusing on the gravity of a case could be captivating. Imagine a gripping “Lethal Weapon 5” where these characters grapple with their own mortality? I’d absolutely love to watch such a film.

Concurrently, Mel Gibson is largely shunned in many studio circles, which likely explains why he hasn’t been able to launch this movie yet. If we’re excluding Donner, are we open to the idea of an older Riggs and Murtaugh? It would be fascinating to see them one last time, perhaps wrapping up the series on a strong note, especially given Mel Gibson’s assertions about the script he possesses. We’ll keep you posted on any developments regarding Lethal Weapon 5 as they arise.
