As 9-1-1: Lone Star Turns Into A Trainwreck, Will Owen Change His Mind On What He Wants In A Lieutenant?

As a dedicated fan of 9-1-1: Lone Star, I must say that Season 5 has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride – and not just metaphorically! The trainwreck episode was as explosive as it gets, with the heroes battling flames while trying to rescue a trapped father and deal with Owen’s dilemma over his lieutenant replacement.

Spoilers ahead for Episode 2 of 9-1-1: Lone Star Season 5, called “Trainwrecks.”

9-1-1: Lone Star’s fifth and final season, scheduled for 2024, is a real-life depiction of a disaster-stricken train. The characters find themselves battling a fiery train wreck, trying to extinguish the flames promptly while also rescuing a man trapped in his overturned car. Interestingly, only Mateo could manage to squeeze into the cramped space to help the father. Meanwhile, Owen is still undecided about who will step up as Judd’s replacement as lieutenant – Marjan or Paul.

During my conversation with Rashad Raisani, the executive producer and co-showrunner of Lone Star, he offered some intriguing perspectives on the catastrophe as well as Owen’s dilemma. His remarks have left me speculating: might this calamity influence his decision regarding a potential replacement for the lieutenant position?

Why 9-1-1: Lone Star Season 5 Is A Real Trainwreck

During my conversation with Rashad Raisani, we touched upon the challenges facing Tarlos and his feelings about writing Grace’s absence, which he described as difficult. Additionally, we delved into the initial major catastrophe of the fifth and final season that our show experienced. I inquired if creating a massive crisis to kick off Season 5 was a significant aim for him, and he revealed:

Personally speaking, our aim was indeed significant, as I understood that we had to make a strong comeback to reassure viewers that we were still active and perhaps catch their attention during these challenging times. Ideally, people might have taken the opportunity to discover or revisit 9-1-1, whether they watched it live on Fox or streamed it on Hulu. In essence, I hoped our absence would lead to a growth in our audience. Moreover, with football season starting again on Fox, I felt this was the perfect moment for them to heavily promote our show. Consequently, we were determined to deliver the most thrilling, exhilarating, and explosive trailers possible.

The fifth season of “9-1-1: Lone Star” is the first to debut during the fall TV season, allowing Fox to advertise it during football season. Notably, like “9-1-1,” the entire series has been available for streaming with a Hulu subscription for some time now. This means that viewers can watch “Lone Star” even during the WGA writers strike and SAG-AFTRA actors strike.

Despite a strong comeback with “Trainwreck”, Lone Star couldn’t escape cancellation as Raisani acknowledged that the signs of its demise were clear even before then. The storyline was yet unresolved when the final episode, titled “Trainwrecks,” concluded, leaving Marjan and Paul in competition for the lieutenant position, while Owen was firm about not wanting to promote them to bring back Judd.

Will Owen Change His Mind About Choosing A Lieutenant?

In the series 9-1-1: Lone Star, Owen’s struggle between Paul and Marjan has mostly been portrayed humorously. He attempted to resolve this dilemma by suggesting that the promotion decision would go to whoever performed better in an exam… but discovered they had tied, setting a new department record. This predicament wouldn’t have arisen if Judd hadn’t left. Executive Producer Rashad Raisani discusses what Owen is searching for in a lieutenant following Judd’s departure.

Owen’s problem is that what he’s looking for is somebody who is incredibly competent, who’s reliable, who’s faithful, who’s selfless, who’s talented, who is easy to work with. And Owen’s big problem, of course, is that he has a few of them. [laughs] He’s done too good a job with his team, because as we mentioned in the show, Mateo has already had this job… when he was working for the guy who ended up having early onset dementia, so he’s had that job as lieutenant, and then Paul and Marjan are both just incredible firefighters, and that is the very horn of Owen’s dilemma. Everything he wants, he has in two different people, and they both have it. So how do you choose?

Owen’s answer to the question of “How do you choose?” so far has been to just not choose, and it seems safe to say that the deadline is going to pass without a definitive choice in light of the deadly trainwreck. Marjan stepped up in particular on the scene of the crisis, with firefighters from another house even assuming she’d be the lieutenant. I just can’t help but wonder how bad the situation will get and if it will shift what Owen wants. When I noted to Raisani that neither Paul nor Marjan is Judd 2.0, the co-showrunner said:

To put it simply, while Judd is indeed exceptional as a firefighter, the others also possess unique qualities that he doesn’t. These factors played a significant role in our decision-making process. Judd has already had his chance to shine, and now it’s time for someone else to step up and take their turn. This is another aspect we wanted to emphasize when making this choice.

Rashad Raisani’s remarks echo what Owen mentioned to Wyatt when Judd’s son requested Owen to reinstate his father for the job, before the unfolding events and potential alterations in Owen’s predicament. The situation requires a resolution swiftly; the one thing I am certain of is that Judd won’t be driving freight trucks extensively throughout Texas during the final season of the show.
