'I've Evolved In A Lot Of Ways': Zachary Quinto Talks Joining NBC's Brilliant Minds After American Horror Story And Heroes

As a long-time fan of Zachary Quinto’s captivating performances, I was thrilled to see him return to our screens with his latest role in NBC’s “Brilliant Minds.” Having grown accustomed to his dark and twisted characters from shows like “Heroes” and “American Horror Story,” it’s a breath of fresh air to witness Quinto stepping into the shoes of Dr. Oliver Wolf, a character deeply rooted in compassion and faith in humanity.

In 2024 prime-time programming, Zachary Quinto reappeared as the leading star of NBC’s latest medical drama, titled “Brilliant Minds”. This series stands apart from other medical dramas such as “Chicago Med”, “Grey’s Anatomy”, and definitely not “Doctor Odyssey”. Set around neurology and inspired by the work of actual author and neurologist Dr. Oliver Sacks, “Brilliant Minds” offered Quinto an opportunity to depart from the types of characters he portrayed in shows like “Heroes” and “American Horror Story”. The actor shared insights about this transition and what drew him to the series “Brilliant Minds” with TopMob.

Fifth plays the character of Dr. Oliver Wolf, a highly intelligent neurologist battling prosopagnosia, or face blindness, who is relentless in his pursuit of helping patients, sometimes pushing boundaries to their limits. This unique approach led him to Bronx General Hospital in New York, where he collaborates with his friend Dr. Carol Pierce and works towards fulfilling a personal mission for his mother. Rest assured, Fifth’s portrayal as Wolf is a stark contrast to his role as Sylar from the original Heroes!

During our chat with Zachary Quinto regarding his latest NBC series (available on Peacock), he opened up about what initially attracted him to the series “Brilliant Minds”. He mentioned it as a more down-to-earth project compared to his other prominent TV roles and the “Star Trek” franchise where he played Spock.

Initially, what attracted me was the fact that it was inspired by Oliver Sacks, a truly remarkable, inspiring, complex individual in real life. This aspect intrigued me greatly. Moreover, collaborating with Michael Grassi, who from our initial conversation seemed genuinely invested and a true partner for this project, was an exciting prospect. Furthermore, I find something appealing about portraying characters like this one. Throughout my career, I’ve played many complex, morally ambiguous characters that were not only intricate but sometimes questionable in their actions. While these roles have been engaging, I’ve grown both as an actor and as a person, and I wanted to take on new challenges.

As the mastermind behind “Brilliant Minds”, Michael Grassi had a wealth of television knowledge under his belt, having produced shows such as “Supergirl”, “Riverdale”, and “Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin”. This attracted Quinto, who was eager to display his growth by portraying Dr. Oliver Wolf. While Quinto isn’t typically pigeonholed on TV as a “dark and twisted” actor, the new series provides an opportunity for him to venture into fresh acting territories. He further expressed:

This project and my character embody the progression I’ve witnessed in my professional life and personal growth. It’s clear that I’m embodying a character who embodies deeper qualities of compassion and faith in humanity – traits that I’ve developed more within myself over the past few years. Moreover, I appreciate being associated with a series that propagates a positive message, reaching out to viewers from a standpoint of hope, optimism, and positivity. In these challenging times, it feels incredibly rewarding to be part of such a project.

With 2024 nearing its end, is there anyone who can dispute Zachary Quinto’s sentiment that we could use “hope, optimism, and light” in primetime right now? For the lead star of Brilliant Minds, one unique aspect of producing Season 1 was an opportunity seldom encountered with network TV projects. When asked about how much of the season had been filmed before its premiere on September 23, Quinto clarified that they completed the entire production by mid-August, having shot “up in Toronto” since March. He further added:

Experiencing the first season was an exhilarating journey, immersed in a creative bubble alongside my team. We crafted the show together, for each other, unaware of audience reactions. Now, we get to witness the audience’s response, understand what resonates, and observe what captivates them. However, during creation, we were blissfully oblivious to such factors, focusing solely on storytelling and discovering the most impactful narratives. This initial phase was unique, free from external influences, allowing us to express ourselves truly. Now, it’s a new stage or aspect of our creative journey.

It’s uncertain if Brilliant Minds will manage to replicate the success of their series in a second season, but viewers must watch the first season to ensure that Zachary Quinto as Dr. Oliver Wolf and Tamberla Perry as Dr. Carol Fierce have a chance for continued appearances. The two actors shared a chemistry reading for their roles, so it’s reasonable to expect that their relationship will be intriguing to follow.

Tune in to the show “Brilliant Minds” every Monday at 10 p.m. ET on NBC, right after the new episodes of “The Voice”. In case you missed the premiere or prefer watching at your convenience, you can stream the episodes on Peacock the following day.
