Japanese and Italian Styles Collide in Shigeaki Asahara's new Reading Lamp

As a gamer who’s spent countless hours navigating the labyrinthine streets of video games like Mirror’s Edge and Watch Dogs, I find myself captivated by the real-life urban design aesthetic embodied in the Torino lamp. Born to the serene landscapes of Japan yet immersed in the historical architectural tapestry of Italy, designer Shigeaki Asahara has managed to weave a unique blend of cultures into this luminary piece.

The Milan-based design company, Stilnovo, has collaborated with the Japanese designer, Shigeaki Asahara, to develop a fresh reading lamp they’ve called “Torino.

Starting today, the lamp’s design is said to echo its creator’s background, who was born in Japan yet has divided his professional life between Italy and his homeland.

In “Torino”, or Turin, there’s an amalgamation of design elements and styles he encountered in both locations. Technically, he drew influences from Japan, while aesthetically, the historic architecture of Piazza Vittorio Veneto in Turin served as his inspiration. Asahara explains that the streets here are arranged orthogonally, featuring clean lines and minimalistic embellishments.

Although the design appears straightforward, options play a crucial role in Torino’s construction. The lamp consists of an adjustable arm and a rotatable head, offering versatility in placement; its light can be dimmed; it can rest on a sturdy base, clamp onto a surface, or be mounted on a wall bracket; and it comes in six different finishes to match various decor styles.

Asahara notes that Stilnovo ultimately served as the link between his aesthetic and technical past, illuminating Turin through their collaboration.

The Torino Lamp is set at a price point of around 383 US Dollars, or approximately 286 Euros. For more information, visit the Stilnovo website.
