Agatha All Along Fans, Let’s Start Theorizing About Emma Caulfield’s Dottie Again

As a longtime fan of comic books and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I find myself utterly captivated by the intricate web of theories that surround the enigmatic character of Dottie in WandaVision. With each new episode, my speculation muscles are getting quite the workout!

Be aware, if you haven’t watched all episodes of Agatha All Along yet, tread carefully on the Witches Road.

So far in “Agatha All Along,” we’re only halfway through its season, and I can’t help but feel that no upcoming Marvel TV series will spark the same level of intense theory-building as this spooky comedy has already done. (Maybe when Paul Bettany’s Vision series reintroduces Ultron.) From trying to figure out Aubrey Plaza’s character, Rio Vidal, to contemplating the consequences of Mrs. Hart’s demise, it’s been a thrilling Halloween season brain teaser.

One long-running magnet for such theories is Buffy the Vampire Slayer vet Emma Caulfield, who reprises her WandaVision role(s) of Dottie Jones / Sarah Proctor for the Disney+ spinoff series. She was previously presumed to be playing a character of great importance, due to reports around the time saying that Kevin Feige had to personally approve her casting. The actress says she was an intentional red herring, but I suspect deeper narrative ideas existed that were cut for time.

In the initial episode, her reappearance in Agatha’s high-profile crime drama was quite amusing, and while we haven’t uncovered any wild secrets about Dottie just yet, the opportunity remains for further exploration of Emma Caulfiend-focused theories such as the one mentioned below.

Could Dottie Be A Specific Variant Of Marvel’s Arcanna?

To start off, Dottie’s infrequent appearances on the TV series WandaVision led people to make connections with the Marvel character Arcanna, mostly because her garden bloomed with vibrant yellow flowers (although they were white at one point, but the yellows stood out more). This comparison didn’t materialize in any definitive way, but the revelations in Agatha All Along have me revisiting the idea of Arcanna.

As a devoted fan, I must admit that Arcanna Jones from Earth-712 could theoretically align with the events on the Witches Road thus far. However, it’s the Arcanna Jones from Earth-31916, crafted by writer J. Michael Straczynski and artist Gary Frank, that has recently captured my imagination. Although this concept may seem outlandish at first glance, let me share some points that make it appear more likely than not.

Comparisons Between Dottie Jones And Earth-31916’s Arcanna

Introduced in Supreme Power #18 back in 2005, this version of Arcanna is not only a scientist but has written a book on quantum physics. Moreover, she’s recognized for her astute observations of human behavior.

  • Emma Caulfield’s first appearance as Dottie in Agatha All Along, which technically part of a spell-oriented fantasy and not reality, features her as a librarian, easily connecting her to books and authorship, as it were.
  • When Agatha asks about the Darkhold (in no certain terms), Dottie advises her to go to Natural Sciences. That doesn’t exactly make sense for a place to find copies of a book of the dead, but considering quantum physics is indeed a natural science, it feels like a potential clue about Dottie’s true identity.

In simpler terms, Arcanna from Earth-31916 wasn’t merely curious about scientific studies out of boredom. Instead, her unique abilities allow her to perceive and influence quantum realms, predict the outcomes of specific events, create lifelike illusions, control matter, and transport characters between different dimensions and universes.

  • The Witches Road is a construct that supposedly changes for every coven who starts the walk, so it’s theoretically possible that everything we’ve seen so far, including the poison-addled Trial #1, isn’t the “real” Road, but rather an illusion that Arcanna set up for Agatha’s half-baked coven to travel. And without anyone being able to tell the difference.
  • Agatha was as surprised as anyone to see the door portal open up on her basement floor, and also seemed concerned that the door closed behind them. Could it be because this isn’t how the Road normally shows itself, and is actually just the way that Arcanna chose to transport the six characters from one realm to the next?
  • If Wanda is truly dead and without a clear hold on Agatha’s spell anymore, maybe it’s been Dottie who’s kept her confused as Agnes for the past three years in inspired-by-true-crime TV mode, and not Rio as many have suspected.

Besides possessing the ability to fly, Arcanna is additionally capable of commanding vast quantities of water simultaneously, and furthermore, she can create the illusion of walking on top of that water.

  • As viewers are well aware, Episode 3’s biggest threat beyond the poison and the hallucinations is the house they’re in being completely submerged underwater over time, despite a total lack of rain or any noteworthy water sources outside the home.

One possibility is that the Witches Road realm itself has the power to manipulate events as suggested, and since it hasn’t been thoroughly explored like other well-known comic book locations, we don’t have concrete proof either way. It could be a different character such as Mephisto or even Alice’s mother who is controlling the situation, allowing Alice to eventually find her.

From my gaming perspective, it seems like the clues are piling on, almost too perfectly, hinting that Emma Caulfield’s character, Dottie, might be up to something. But if the show decides to throw us a curveball and unveil one of the other characters as Arcanna instead, that would be quite disappointing, especially without any strong WandaVision connections. Or perhaps it’s Phil, Dottie’s husband, who can’t seem to keep his clothes clean of bloodstains.

Maybe Dottie Is Keeping A More Hellacious Secret

Considering the meticulousness seen throughout this series, I can’t help but wonder if Dottie’s fake credit being displayed on a high school football scoreboard for the Westview High Blue Devils (typically, home teams are listed on the left) is merely a coincidence. While yellow may perfectly symbolize the magical aspect of Caulfield’s character, might it not be another instance of misdirection…more like a red herring than a witch’s color?

Given that Mephisto’s influence has been explicitly mentioned and hinted at the presence of his underlings, it’s plausible that Dottie could be one of his demonic followers. As for the Blue, it might stem from the team’s mascot, a common sight in our world. The Yellow Devils, however, are less clear unless we’re referring to the yellow suit worn by Matt Murdock as Daredevil.

As a game enthusiast, I’m eagerly geared up for potentially being off-base on every single point – nevertheless, Agatha All Along has me stretching my speculation skills like never before since WandaVision concluded. Be sure to drop by regularly to catch the clue that sends my theory-building flag soaring next!
