As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for binge-watching quality content, I must admit that the upcoming lineup on Max streaming service has piqued my interest, particularly the Spanish original series “When Nobody Sees Us.” Having grown up watching Spanish dramas and being an avid fan of crime thrillers, this show seems tailored to my preferences.
Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming platform Max is planning to cater to Spanish audiences by offering a blend of original dramas, documentaries, and entertainment programs, as announced by a high-ranking executive during an informative session at the Iberseries & Platino Industria conference in Madrid on Tuesday.
Alberto Carullo, Vice President of Local Original Production for Iberia (Spain) and Italy at Warner Bros. Discovery, attended a discussion during the Spanish and Portuguese television conference and trade fair held in Madrid on Tuesday.
Speaking as a fan, I’d be thrilled to share one of the 12 original Spanish productions that the company is currently working on or developing. First up is “When Nobody Sees Us” by Enrique Urbizu, which was given a sneak peek at the San Sebastian Film Festival and happens to be their first Spanish original. This captivating series revolves around two powerful female leads: Magaly Castillo, a U.S. military police lieutenant, and Lucía Gutiérrez, a Spanish Civil Guard colonel. They join forces to unravel a sequence of intriguing crimes at an Army Air Force base.
The show, titled “From Zeta Studios” and adapted from a novel by Sergio Sarria, begins its storyline during Spain’s Easter week, famous for its processions. Actress Maribel Verdú (known for her roles in Pan’s Labyrinth and The Flash) portrays Gutiérrez, while Mariela Garriga (upcoming Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning II) takes on the role of Castillo. Austin Amelio (The Walking Dead), Ben Temple (30 Coins), and Dani Rovira (Spanish Affair) complete the cast ensemble.
As an ardent admirer, I can’t help but express my excitement over Carullo’s proposed documentary series. This captivating project will delve into the personal journeys of 13 women within Opus Dei, a remarkable Catholic organization that emerged in Spain in 1928 under the guidance of a priest dedicated to guiding members towards striving for Christian “perfection.
Monica Terribas’ book, “The Heroic Minute: I Too Left Opus Dei,” which includes actress Claudia Traisac in reenactments depicting the stories told by the women, is also one.
Carullo, who once held the position of head of drama at Warner Bros. International Television Production for Spain and Portugal, mentioned that along with dramas and documentaries, Max in Spain is also placing wagers on entertainment genres, including popular reality competition shows like “Pekin’ Express.
The representative from Max emphasized that Spain prioritizes homegrown productions, stating, ‘Content forms the heart of our operations.’ To ensure customer satisfaction, our main goal is to deliver quality local content.
Day one at Iberseries showcased a key speech from actress Paz Vega, a highlight discussion involving Walt Disney Spain, as well as former Lionsgate executive Paul Presburger and others.
