Occasionally, museum employees find it challenging to discern between art and everyday items, as demonstrated in a recent occurrence at the LAM Museum in the Netherlands. In this case, an elevator maintenance worker, temporarily replacing a regular staff member, mistakenly discarded Alexandre Lavet’s All the Good Times We Spent Together (2016), assuming it was waste. The artwork, comprising two hand-painted beer cans designed to symbolize nostalgic friendships, had been strategically positioned inside an elevator shaft to resemble something carelessly left behind.
At LAM, recognized for its creative food-inspired artwork and unique presentations, they strategically place items in unusual spots to inspire viewers to perceive everyday objects from a fresh perspective. As museum director Sietske van Zanten explained, “Our aim is to help people view the ordinary with a renewed perspective.” Unbeknownst to the technician, one piece was mistakenly thrown away by him in good faith.
Thankfully, the artwork was rescued from the bin before it could be discarded permanently. Curator Elisabeth van den Bergh then cleaned the sculpture and positioned it on a more conventional pedestal closer to the gallery entrance for safety purposes.
