The Greatest Showman Director Explains the Monkey in Robbie Wiliams' Biopic

As a film enthusiast with a penchant for biopics and a soft spot for the unconventional, I find myself intrigued by Michael Gracey’s audacious approach to Robbie Williams’ life story. The transformation of the British music icon into a CGI monkey is nothing short of groundbreaking, and it certainly piques my curiosity.

As biopics centered around music have started to feel a bit repetitive, filmmakers are getting creative to draw crowds back into theaters. Michael Gracey, director of “The Greatest Showman,” is taking things up a notch with his upcoming movie, “Better Man,” about British pop sensation Robbie Williams. But what’s his secret? Is Williams going to be molded out of Legos (like in “Piece by Piece”)? Or will the film blend musical elements while maintaining an edge of reality (similar to “Joker: Folie à Deux”?). Or perhaps it will veer off course and tell a wild tale of drug cartels and tributes to Madonna (akin to “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story”)? Nope, he’s transformed Robbie Williams into a monkey. (In my own words as a movie enthusiast: As biopics have become a bit predictable in the music world, Michael Gracey is shaking things up with his new film about Robbie Williams, “Better Man.” He isn’t using Legos, blending reality and musical elements like Joker, or telling a drug cartel story with Madonna tributes – he’s turning Robbie into a monkey!)

After the debut of the first teaser for Better Man, Robbie Williams and Michael Gracey had a chat to discuss the unusual creative choice. Echoing the curiosity of many, Williams initiated the interview by asking the question everyone was wondering, “Now about that monkey, what’s behind it?” The unique choice stemmed from an initial discussion between Williams and Gracey concerning the music legend’s self-perception. Gracey elaborated:

“I asked you if you were an animal, how would you see yourself? In your own words you would refer to being dragged up on stage to perform like a monkey. I immediately thought portraying you not as we see you, but as how you see yourself. It immediately clicked in a way that I was like, with your voice and that monkey, I am gonna see you and relate to you in a way that is going to be more engaging than yet another musical biopic.”

Considering Robbie Williams in the role of a monkey raises numerous practical concerns

The movie titled “Better Man” will debut in certain US theaters on Christmas Day, December 25th. However, it doesn’t seem to be a holiday-themed movie like “Curious George: A Very Monkey Christmas”. After its initial screening, it has garnered positive responses from both critics and audiences based on the first trailer. The film is currently doing well, with an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Following its limited release, a wider theatrical launch is scheduled for January 17th.
