As a seasoned movie buff with over three decades of watching westerns under my belt, I can’t help but feel a twinge of nostalgia as I bid farewell to John Dutton, played by the legendary Kevin Costner, in the final chapters of Yellowstone. While his absence was always part of the grand tapestry that showrunner Taylor Sheridan weaves, it still leaves a gaping hole in the heart of any devoted fan.
It’s regrettable for many fans, but Kevin Costner won’t be returning to his character in the second half of the final season of the highly acclaimed neo-western TV series Yellowstone, created by Taylor Sheridan. The first eight episodes are set to air early in 2023, and the remaining six episodes will conclude the series in November without Costner. However, one of the main stars of the franchise has revealed that Costner’s departure was pre-planned, as the show intended to wrap up the Dutton family storyline.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, actress Kelly Reilly from Yellowstone discussed the possible consequences of excluding Kevin Costner’s character from the final episodes. Interestingly, she mentioned that this setup might have been closer to what showrunner Taylor Sheridan initially envisioned for the series. This is intriguing considering John Dutton has recently become the governor of Montana in the second half of the season. It remains uncertain how the show will address his absence, although a time jump seems likely. However, Reilly did not reveal any specific details about this potential change.

Yellowstone Will Live on Without Its Star
The popular series, Yellowstone, has a history of broadening its scope with prequels such as 1883 and 1927 (including a second season for the latter featuring Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren). It’s worth noting that a spinoff show titled The Madison is currently being developed. This new series will introduce a fresh family and a stellar cast of A-list actors, with Michelle Pfeiffer, Patrick J. Adams from Suits, and Matthew Fox from Lost confirmed to star. Reports also suggest that Kurt Russell may join the cast in discussions. Initially, there were whispers that Matthew McConaughey would spearhead the cast, but he is not connected to the series at this moment.
Based on recent updates, it seems that there’s a strong likelihood of Yellowstone Season 6, given that key actors Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser are in negotiations to reappear. If these agreements are finalized, we can look forward to more stories involving the Dutton family, along with a spinoff series featuring fresh characters. Unfortunately, it’s unlikely that Kevin Costner will return soon, as his focus is on the expanding audience for his western saga Horizon, following its less-than-impressive performance at the box office.
