Tom Selleck Breaks Down His 'Frustration' Over Blue Bloods Ending, And I Honestly Can't Think Of Any Other TV Cancellations That Compare

As a gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a sense of camaraderie with Tom Selleck and the cast of Blue Bloods. Just like in our shared world of gaming, where we fight tooth and nail to keep our favorite titles alive, these actors are battling the network executives to keep their beloved series on the air.

Among the long-running dramas on television, one of the small screens’ most enduring dramas is due to conclude at the end of the 2024 TV schedule. Although numerous shows are ending this year, Blue Bloods, surprisingly, was not anticipated to depart from its Friday night slot on CBS. Star Tom Selleck has openly expressed his disinterest in the series coming to an end, and now we have a better understanding of why he’s so displeased about it.

A significant aspect of Selleck’s perspective likely stems from his desire to maintain a stable job and be close to his loved ones for more than a decade. However, this isn’t the sole cause of his discontent over CBS deciding to end the police drama, which is one of the rare shows that surpassed 250 episodes. After the final episode was filmed, the Magnum P.I. alum expressed his thoughts to TV Insider, stating that the continued success of Blue Bloods alone justifies its continuation, according to his statement.

I’m feeling a bit exasperated lately. Over the past eight episodes, I’ve found myself more focused on the show’s continued success rather than discussing its ending for Blue Bloods. If you exclude the three sports shows, we ranked 6th out of the Top 100 Shows of 2023-2024 in terms of total viewers, coming in at number 9 overall! I don’t want to become a grumpy old man shouting ‘Get off my lawn!’ Instead, I don’t hold grudges, but if I were to suggest to the television network that they could air our show in their least favorable time slot and it would ensure them a victory every Friday night for the next 15 years, it would be hard to swallow.

Tom Selleck, known for his long-running role in a popular series, might very well feel justified in becoming increasingly grumpy, much like Abe Simpson shouting at the sky. Remarkably, this show has consistently ranked among the highest-watched television broadcasts annually, even airing on nights considered traditionally poor for TV ratings and audiences – weekdays, as opposed to more favored days such as Saturdays which gain support from sports events and cable movies.

It’s clear that Selleck isn’t the only cast member voicing concerns of this kind, and it’s tough to fathom that everyone involved in the show fully grasps why the network chose to cancel it. He further expressed a particular grievance about CBS’ decision, stating as follows: “I can’t help but wonder…

My annoyance stems from the fact that the show was often overlooked, as it excelled right from the start. To put it simply, untangling everything is going to be a lengthy process.

If “Blue Bloods” hadn’t initially performed well and only later excelled in ratings, the network executives might have been more inclined to persist with the show in order to consistently repeat those results. However, its talented ensemble cast of popular actors attracted a large audience when it debuted in 2010, making such continuation unnecessary.

As a dedicated fan, I’ve been following the gripping storylines of Blue Bloods since day one. Season 1 drew in over 12.5 million viewers on average, and that number skyrocketed to an astounding 14.07 million for Season 7 – a record high! Even in these times when ratings are generally dropping, it wasn’t until Season 12 that the show dipped below double-digit viewership. That was only two seasons before they decided to wrap things up, leaving us hanging just a bit longer.

The Cool Way Blue Bloods Accommodates Tom Selleck’s Love For His Ranch While Filming

It’s not unusual for network executives to pull the plug on a series when its audience numbers fall below a specific level, but the low viewership figures of “Blue Bloods” are envied by many other shows. In fact, I can’t imagine any other show that was terminated despite being an unquestionable success.

It’s clear that the executives at CBS are facing financial challenges when it comes to sustaining series like “Blue Bloods” for a prolonged period, as cast and crew salary increases are tied to the number of seasons a show lasts. Moreover, this type of show doesn’t generate significant revenue through merchandising, such as toys, video games, novels, etc. However, if it’s not broken, why cancel it?

Blue Bloods will return to CBS from its mini-hiatus on Friday, October 18, at 9:00 p.m. ET.
