As a seasoned movie reviewer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the news about Ana Nogueira penning not one but two DC Universe films – Supergirl and Teen Titans – has me more than a little intrigued!

As a film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that my journey in Hollywood is far from over! After making waves with “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” I’ll be diving into screenwriting with a new project (according to Deadline). I’ve been an actress for quite some time now, gracing the screens in series like “The Michael J. Fox Show,” “The Vampire Diaries,” “The Blacklist,” and most recently on STARZ’s “Hightown.

In November of 2023, The Hollywood Reporter announced that actress and playwright Nogueira would be writing another script for a Supergirl project. Previously, she was hired to create a spin-off for the controversial movie version of The Flash (2023) directed by Andy Muschietti. Despite Sasha Calle’s outstanding portrayal of Kara Zor-EL, Superman’s cousin, The Flash’s big-screen solo film failed at the box office during its brief 2023 cinema release.

54 years ago, the initial group of young superheroes known as the Teen Titans first appeared in the comic book “The Brave and the Bold” issue 54 by DC Comics. The original team consisted of Robin (Dick Grayson), Kid Flash, and Aqualad, although they were not called the Teen Titans in that classic story. Wonder Girl joined later in “The Brave and the Bold” issue 60, and it wasn’t until 1966’s “Teen Titans” issue 1 that the team got their own solo comic series.

Holy Robins in the DCU, Batman!

It’s tough to conceive of a Teen Titans storyline without Robin, the Boy Wonder, or his adult superhero persona Nightwing taking charge. Therefore, it seems reasonable to expect that Ana Nogueira’s Teen Titans movie will incorporate Dick Grayson, Batman’s original sidekick, in some capacity.

It’s clear that Robin didn’t have a significant role in the Snyderverse, with only a few hints about Jason Todd’s death being the second Robin. However, it looks like this character will finally get more attention in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU. On October 1st, Gunn revealed on X (previously known as Twitter) that they are developing an animated film called “Dynamic Duo” which is heavily focused on Robin.

The animated story could draw inspiration from a variety of DC Comics tales, yet it’s crucial to highlight that Grayson and Todd had two unique relationships that the DC Universe might delve into if the creative team revisits these characters’ beginnings. Initially, in the “Pre-Crisis” issue 357 of Batman, Todd is introduced as a blond circus acrobat who mirrors Dick Grayson in many ways. In these narratives, Grayson and Todd are close friends, almost like brothers. Interestingly, it’s Grayson, not Bruce Wayne, who encourages Todd to wear the Boy Wonder costume and adopt the Robin identity as Batman’s new partner, starting from issue 366 of Batman.

In the revised origin of Jason Todd (seen in Batman issue #408), set after the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” event, the dark-haired character is depicted as a lawless, rebellious young man with a hot temper. This recklessness ultimately leads to his death at the hands of the Joker, as portrayed in Batman issues #426 to #429 during the “A Death in the Family” storyline. In this new universe, Dick Grayson and Jason Todd collaborate only once, with Dick playing Nightwing and Jason taking on the role of Robin.

Moving forward, the Dynamic Duo, comprising Bruce Wayne and Talia al Ghul’s son Damian Wayne, will play a significant role as a more menacing Robin in the upcoming live-action film titled “The Brave and the Bold” within the DC Universe. James Gunn has expressed his fondness for this portrayal of the Boy Wonder, with Robin’s presence being planned since the announcement of the DCU’s “Gods and Monsters” back in January 2023. As a result, with upcoming films like “Teen Titans,” “The Brave and the Bold,” and the “Dynamic Duo,” the DCU will have multiple Robins to distribute among its stories.
