Kevin Smith Shares New Jay & Silent Bob Release Date and Plot

As a seasoned movie critic with a penchant for the quirky and the nostalgic, I find myself drawn to Kevin Smith‘s latest offering, “The 4:30 Movie.” A film that harkens back to his roots, it’s as if Smith has taken us on a time-traveling trip to his own youthful cinematic adventures.

We had a chat with the renowned Kevin Smith during the digital launch of his latest comedy, “The 4:30 Movie”. This production is unique as it was filmed inside a New Jersey movie theater that Smith himself owns. The young cast portrays a narrative reminiscent of Smith’s own youthful struggles. Recently, Smith has been occupied with various other projects, including a new installment in the “Jay and Silent Bob” series, which he discussed further at this year’s Comic-Con event in San Diego.

Smith mentioned to MovieWeb that we may not see Jay and Silent Bob: Store Wars this year as originally planned. Instead, it seems like March of 2024 is the new release date, which is fine given that 2025 marks the 30th anniversary of Mallrats. This timing lends a nice symmetry to the release,” Smith said about Jay and Silent Bob: Store Wars. He also shared the movie’s plot with us.

The action unfolds in their marijuana dispensary. The story revolves around rival dispensaries. So Jay and Bob run their marijuana store, and then another one pops up right across the street, leading them to spend the entire film in a fierce competition with them. It’s quite reminiscent of the classic comic strip “Spy vs. Spy”, full of tension and conflict, but it’s also genuinely humorous.

As I was penning it down, I found myself musing, “Gee, if I were to eliminate Jay and Silent Bob from this script and replace them with other characters, the movie would still maintain its essence, right?” Smith added. It’s gratifying that it’s set in that universe, and there are connections between scenes, but at its core, it’s a hilarious stoner comedy. After three decades, I believe I’ve finally cracked the code on what makes a successful stoner comedy — a breakthrough, thirty years into my acting career.

A ‘Kinship’ Between Clerks and The 4:30 Movie

In relation to his 30-year career, Smith made an intriguing comparison for us between another one of his works and the production of “The 4:30 Movie”, set in the ’80s. “The cinema seats are the exact same ones I sat on when I watched Friday the 13th Part 2,” Smith said. “It felt like, ‘As long as we aim a camera here, we can pull off it being 1986. It could be the era I went to the movies.’ And that idea fueled the storyline and defined what it would become.” He added:

Later on, I asked, “What was the most memorable event from that time?” My response was, “Why, let me share the tale of my first date! That’s where the idea for

Smith added, “It ends up becoming something people can cling to, like a comforting blanket, how personal it has become, given its casual origins such as ‘We found a location, let’s move forward from there.’ This development brings me immense joy. It’s no surprise, really, since that’s exactly how Clerks and The 4:30 Movie came to be. They share a common bond.

What a throughline that is. From Saban Films, The 4:30 Movie is now available on digital platforms like Google Play and on Apple TV through the link below. The film will be available on Video on Demand, Blu-ray + DVD + Digital, and Amazon-exclusive 4K + Blu-ray + Digital SteelBook on November 5 from Lionsgate.
