As a moviegoer who’s seen more films than I can count sheep at night, I must say Pedro Pascal’s performance as Fink in “The Wild Robot” is nothing short of extraordinary! I went into the theater expecting a funny sidekick, but boy, was I wrong! Fink turned out to be the heart and soul of this enchanting tale.

Caution: This discussion might reveal plot details from the DreamWorks movie “The Wild Robot”. If you haven’t seen it yet and want to watch, catch it in theaters currently showing.

Did you realize that Pedro Pascal is one of the main actors in “The Wild Robot” movie, even though he’s only listed second in the credits? I had no idea until I was actually watching the film in the theater, a 2024 animated project from the film schedule. And his character, full of adorable creatures, was quite a surprise – it tugged at my heartstrings in an unexpected way.

Upon starting “The Wild Robot”, I was well-aware that it had received outstanding reviews, and that Lupita Nyong’o portrayed the main robot Roz while Kit Connor provided her adopted goose son Brightbill’s voice. I was also aware of the strong supporting cast, but I mistakenly thought Pedro Pascal’s character Fink was just a part of that ensemble. However, I discovered that Fink plays a significant role in Brightbill’s life, acting almost like a second parental figure, and he undergoes a great deal of character development throughout the story.

In their encounter, Fink initially presents himself as a typical cunning fox accustomed to solitude, employing his sharp wit and humorous, dismissive comments to maintain distance. Yet upon crossing paths with Roz and her gosling, he embarks on a transformation that involves lowering his defenses, displaying vulnerability, and learning the art of giving and receiving love.

It’s quite possible that you’re familiar with the acclaim that “The Wild Robot” has received, described by Eric Eisenberg as “beautiful, emotional, and darkly funny.” Indeed, Fink manages to encapsulate each of these qualities flawlessly.

During the film, I had the most hearty laughs at his witty remarks concerning their surroundings, and watching him playfully banter with Roz about the cycle of life was a treat. To achieve this, Pascal utilized his distinctive goofy allure that he exhibits in interviews and films such as “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent“, making Fink an enchanting fox that one can’t help but adore.

In addition, Fink’s development mirrored Roz’s throughout the movie, and as the story unfolds, Fink develops a growing affection for the robot, Bightbill, and ultimately cares about all the creatures around them.

I’ve finally finished watching all the How to Train Your Dragon films, and let me tell you, they are absolutely fantastic!

To be honest, although the scene where Brightbill flew away for migration in the film was quite moving, it was actually Fink’s reaction when Roz expressed a desire to return to her manufacturer and his secret return to their home during the cold season that truly resonated with me.

However, what truly sealed my appreciation for Pedro Pascal’s character as the standout in the movie was when he demonstrated everything he had learned from aiding the animals survive winter. At first, the Fink we initially encountered would have never displayed such kindness, but by the end of the film, he had transformed into someone ready and eager to ensure all his animal companions survived.

In essence, Pascal delivers a touching and open-hearted portrayal that won me over and made me fall for Fink the fox deeply.

In truth, each character in “The Wild Robot” has a touching and captivating tale – from Roz’s odyssey into motherhood and self-discovery to Brightbill’s pursuit of self-understanding. Initially, I assumed these elements would be present. Yet, I also believed Fink would serve as comic relief. In contrast, he ended up having one of the most complex and emotionally charged journeys in the movie.

Ultimately, I’m eager for “The Wild Robot” to be recognized as one of Pedro Pascal’s finest acting roles. His portrayal of Fink is simply captivating, and the storyline that unfolds, with this robot undergoing unexpected experiences of love and life, leaves a profound impact.
