OMEGA has reintroduced one of its most popular and iconic timepieces, the Speedmaster FOiS (First OMEGA in Space), a model with a rich history dating back to the late ’50s before it was discontinued in 2021. The original CK 2998 FOiS was famously a personal watch of NASA astronaut Walter “Wally” Schirra, who wore it during the Sigma 7 mission of the Mercury program in 1962.
As a gamer, I’m thrilled to share that the fresh FOiS timekeeper I recently got my hands on is a stunning reboot, reminiscent of its classic predecessor. The dial, a sleek gray-blue canvas, carries forward the original’s genetic code – the indices and Alpha-style hands are infused with vintage Super-LumiNova for that nostalgic glow in dim light. It’s housed in a polished stainless steel case, measuring 39.7mm across, and it’s complemented by a black aluminum bezel ring, featuring the iconic “Dot Over Ninety” tachymeter scale.
The most striking difference lies in its reduced thickness. At 13.4mm, this latest model not only boasts a slimmer profile than previous versions but also incorporates the contemporary Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861 – an updated version of the caliber that powered the original FOIS watches. The caseback bears a Seahorse medallion, as well as “SPEEDMASTER,” “THE FIRST OMEGA IN SPACE,” and “OCTOBER 3, 1962” engravings.
The cost of the newly introduced “First OMEGA in Space” Speedmaster varies between $7,500 and $7,900 USD.
