As a long-time admirer of cinema that pushes boundaries and challenges the status quo, I am thrilled to hear about Mubi’s acquisition of Luca Guadagnino’s Daniel Craig-starrer, “Queer.” Having grown up on the works of Burroughs, I can only imagine the depth and complexity this adaptation will bring to the table.
Streaming platform Mubi has sealed a multi-region agreement for Luca Guadagnino’s film “Queer,” starring Daniel Craig.
The agreement revealed on Friday grants Mubi exclusive distribution rights for the movie “Queer” in the UK, Ireland, Canada, Latin America, Germany, Austria, Benelux, Spain, Turkey, and India. Additionally, Mubi obtains all rights, barring theater rights, in Italy. Meanwhile, A24 retains the film’s distribution rights for the United States.
The film titled Queer made its debut at the Venice Film Festival, while it held its North American debut at Toronto just last month.
In this film, Daniel Craig acts alongside Drew Starkey, Lesley Manville, and Jason Schwartzman. The story is adapted from Burroughs’ 1950s autobiographical novel, set in Mexico City. Craig portrays William Lee, an American expat and heroin addict who spends most of his days alone, save for occasional interactions with other members of the small American community. A chance meeting with Eugene Allerton, played by Starkey, a former soldier turned expat, gives him hope that he might find a meaningful relationship at last.
The movie “Queer” was created by Guadagnino through his company Frenesy Film and by Lorenzo Mieli for Fremantle-owned group The Apartment, along with Fremantle and Fremantle North America in partnership with Cinecittà and Frame by Frame. Fremantle provided the financing for the film. The distributor, The Veterans, is responsible for worldwide sales of the movie and they negotiated a deal with Mubi to distribute it.
Mubi has begun its U.S. cinematic lineup with the debut of Coralie Fargeat’s film, “The Substance.” Amongst its recent purchases are Andrea Arnold’s movie, “Bird,” Magnus von Horn’s work, “The Girl with the Needle,” and Levan Akin’s production, “Crossing.
