Monster Season 3 Gets Official Title From Creator Ryan Murphy

As a die-hard fan of Ryan Murphy‘s gripping and thought-provoking work, I eagerly anticipate the upcoming third season of “Monster.” The title “The Original Monster” immediately piques my curiosity, especially given the fascinating story of Ed Gein that it promises to unravel.

The second season of the acclaimed series “Monster” is currently causing a buzz on Netflix following its massive success, and its creator and showrunner, Ryan Murphy, has already begun discussions about Season 3. Known for his hit true-crime anthology series, Murphy has officially announced that the third season will be titled “The Original Monster”. Additionally, Murphy, a prominent figure in modern television, has disclosed that production of this upcoming season will kick off on Halloween, in collaboration with “Monster” partner Ian Brennan.

Thus far, the anthology series has delved into the tales of Jeffrey Dahmer and the Menendez brothers in previous seasons. In “The Original Monster,” Murphy will narrate the story of Ed Gein, one of the earliest serial killers in American history. The narrative unfolds in the late 1950s and centers around Charlie Hunnam as the deeply troubled murderer who claimed nine lives and disfigured numerous corpses. Gein’s chilling case served as a significant inspiration for horror movie legends like Leatherface from “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

In an interview with Collider, Murphy discussed his future projects and the reason behind choosing the case of Gein, which occurred during a period when the American media wasn’t as prominent. Fans of Seasons 1 and 2 of “Monster” are aware of the significant role the media plays in the portrayed cases, so Season 3 promises to be different for the series according to Murphy’s remarks.

Following the completion of ‘Menendez’, Ian and I engaged in a discussion. Our shared curiosity revolved around the origin of our fascination with serial killers: when and where did it first emerge? How did this particular trend take shape?

According to our findings, it was Ed who initially gained such extraordinary fame, and his celebrity status emerged almost immediately following his arrest. At the time, there was nothing comparable in people’s experience. Later on, we discovered that he was driven, as evidenced by his success – however, he struggled with schizophrenia. The intriguing tale of how he transformed into this iconic figure is certainly worth exploring.

Additionally, Murphy discussed the process behind choosing Hunnam for the main character. This decision was made due to a suggestion from director Max Winkler, who is the son of Henry Winkler. Worth noting, Winkler will direct several episodes of “The Original Monster” after his work within the Murphy-verse on shows such as “American Horror Story“, “Feud“, and “Monster“.

My friend Max Winkler is one of the directors for several episodes, alongside my co-creator Ian Brennan. In a recent conversation with Max, he mentioned that he’s acquainted with Charlie. Excitedly, Max asked, ‘Gosh, do you admire Charlie’s work?’ To which I responded, ‘I’ve always dreamt of collaborating with him.’

I recently had a meeting with Charlie, who is truly delightful, and he took a liking to our project. He appreciates its purpose. It’s said that every generation encounters the monster they deserve, right? We’re covering various topics in our work, but let me tell you, Charlie is an exceptional individual.

Murphy’s career in television speaks for itself. While he’s done several TV shows dealing with famous real-life cases like American Crime Story (with its three outstanding iterations), Feud and Halston, with Monster, he has cleverly mixed the sensationalism and the realism of the two cases depicted, landing two major hits. However, this mixture has not been without its share of controversy, particularly where the latest series of Monster is concerned. We await the further criticisms and controversies that will inevitably come with Monster Season 3.
