It’s easy to identify a Burton movie by its unique visuals and eccentric characters, and “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” is no exception. Despite being released nearly 9 years ago, the movie received mixed responses from viewers and critics initially. Critical acclaim was limited due to its substantial production budget of $110 million, though it did manage to make a profit at the box office.
In the novel by Ransom Riggs titled “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children,” the dark fantasy setting seemed tailor-made for Tim Burton, perhaps leading to the disappointment felt by many upon seeing the film adaptation due to inflated expectations. Directed by Burton and written by Jane Goldman, this intriguing tale follows the journey of a boy named Jake as he uncovers a hidden time loop where Miss Peregrine and her peculiar children reside. As Jake delves deeper into the mysteries of the home, the fearsome Hollowghasts, and his own extraordinary abilities, he finds himself in grave danger.
Initially overlooked, the fantasy adventure “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children,” which was relatively unnoticed following its release in 2016, has swiftly climbed the global Netflix rankings since it debuted on the platform on October 1st. This revival could be attributed to Netflix’s unique ability to bring content into the spotlight and perhaps boosted by the recent buzz surrounding Tim Burton’s film “Beetlejuice” being one of the most discussed movies in the past month.
Miss Peregine’s Home for Peculiar Children Has a Not So Peculiar Cast
Similar to many of Tim Burton’s films, the cast of “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” was a mix of well-known actors and lesser-known talents at the time. Notably, Asa Butterfield took on the role of Jake, who later gained recognition from the popular Netflix series “Sex Education.” However, when he appeared in the movie, Butterfield wasn’t yet a household name; he had previously worked with several big names in movies like “Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang,” “Ender’s Game,” and Martin Scorsese’s hit “Hugo.
Ella Purnell, a young actor from the film’s ensemble, portrayed Emma, an aero kinetic teenager. She has recently gained significant popularity on streaming platforms due to her leading role in the Prime Video series Fallout. Similar to Butterfield, Purnell was not new to major films; she had previously appeared in the action movie based on a comic book, Kick-Ass 2, and played the younger version of Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent in Disney’s live-action adaptation of the same title.
The film features well-known Hollywood actors like Eva Green, Terence Stamp, Judi Dench, Samuel L. Jackson, Allison Janney from ‘The West Wing’ and ‘Mom’, and Rupert Everett. Despite an impressive cast, a talented director, and high expectations, the movie didn’t receive a great response. 20th Century Fox opted not to make a sequel, but with Netflix’s ability to revive shows and movies, and now that Disney owns it, there’s a possibility we might see Miss Peregrine return in some capacity in the future.
