David Corenswet 'Always Felt Skinny' Before Bulking Up For Superman, But He Went Way Beyond The Weight Gain He Thought Would Me Him 'Happy'

As a fan who has grown up with Superman being an integral part of my childhood, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and nostalgia as we approach the release of James Gunn’s take on the Man of Steel. The transformation that David Corenswet underwent to play our beloved hero is nothing short of inspiring.

The superhero genre associated with DC Comics is undergoing a significant change, as demonstrated by the conclusion of the DCEU (available on Max subscription following Aquaman 2). Now, fans eagerly await the new direction for the DC Universe that James Gunn has planned. This transformation will kick off with Superman, the initial project in the series titled Gods and Monsters. Actor David Corenswet initially felt underweight but gained significantly more than expected to portray Superman, striving for a physique he believed would make him content.

The details we have regarding Superman are not extensive, but fans are excited to witness Corenswet’s portrayal in the lead role. To embody the Man of Steel, the actor significantly increased his weight to 238 pounds through rigorous workouts and a specialized diet. During an interview on the Manly Things podcast, he candidly shared his feelings about developing muscle as Clark Kent. In his own words:

I’ve consistently felt underdeveloped, and I’ve never managed to fully fill out a t-shirt, while also yearning for a more substantial physical appearance than what I currently possess.

Well, deciding to play a comic book character is one way to change that. Plenty of actors have had physical transformations in order to look like a superhero. Brie Larson got ripped for Captain Marvel, and has been honest about how it’s helped her feel powerful. And it sounds like Corenswet’s really felt the difference, especially given his previous feelings about his physique.

In preparation for his role, Corenswet adopted a particular diet and significantly increased his weight to fit into Superman’s costume. Photos from the set and limited promotional images suggest that he looks fantastic. During the same interview, the actor from Twisters shared his feelings about gaining weight, mentioning:

As a devoted admirer of Superman’s strength, I found myself yearning for a substantial increase in my physique. Initially, I believed that tipping the scales at 210 pounds would bring me joy, but as fate would have it, I managed to reach a staggering 238 pounds. That was my zenith.

It would be intriguing to observe how this transformation influences David Corenswet’s role as the lead in the Superman cast. He has a challenging task ahead given the numerous legendary actors who have played the character previously. However, with James Gunn directing, he’s certainly in capable hands when it comes to comic book movies.

The spotlight is on the upcoming film titled Superman, where a variety of other DC characters, including Corenswet’s lead role, will make an appearance. It promises to be intriguing to observe their interactions and how the unique abilities they possess shape the movie’s action sequences.

On July 11th, 2025, you can catch Superman in theaters! To make sure you don’t miss any other exciting releases that year, take a look at the upcoming 2025 movie schedule for planning your cinema outings ahead of time.
