As a seasoned cinephile with decades of film and television consumption under my belt, I must say that Kurt Sutter’s abrupt departure from The Abandons leaves me somewhat perplexed. Having followed his career since the groundbreaking days of Sons of Anarchy, it’s hard not to feel a pang of disappointment at his untimely exit.

After a sudden exit from The Abandons, three weeks prior to the planned completion of filming on the Netflix series, Kurt Sutter has bid farewell and moved on. Beyond his recent departure from The Abandons, Sutter is well-known for being the mastermind behind the critically acclaimed and highly successful television shows such as Sons of Anarchy (where he also portrayed Otto Delaney), its spinoff Mayans M.C., and the brief historical drama The Bastard Executioner.

According to a recent article from Deadline, Sutter has parted ways with ‘The Abandons’ due to creative disagreements with Netflix. It seems that most of these conflicts arose from the show’s first episode, which had an extended 100-minute runtime. To make it more manageable, this episode was split into two separate, smaller episodes. However, this decision necessitated additional scenes to be shot to bridge the two and create a cliffhanger ending for the first part that leads into its sequel. Though these scenes have been written, they haven’t been filmed yet. Netflix has viewed the first two episodes and parts of the third, but they were dissatisfied with where the edits were made. Otto Bathurst and Rob Askins will now oversee the reshoots and the rest of filming since, given the limited time left in production, hiring another showrunner would be impractical at this stage.

Fiona Nolan, a deeply religious Irishwoman unable to have children on her own, endeavors to create a family by adopting four orphaned children, viewing her actions as part of a greater purpose. However, she faces challenges when European nobles assert ownership over the newly acquired home in Oregon that she now resides in.

What Kurt Sutter’s Exit Means for The Abandons

As a movie reviewer, I must admit that my initial excitement for “The Abandons,” which Netflix greenlit as a 10-episode series in 2022, was somewhat tempered by the budgetary constraints that began to surface. The project’s expenses escalated significantly, leading Netflix to trim down the episode count from ten to eight, reflecting their broader efforts to curb costs across their content offerings.

Since most of the filming has been completed, Sutter’s departure from the show is unlikely to significantly affect its overall quality, as he was primarily overseeing the production. However, considering that the production initially had more time to develop the plot, and then fluctuated between episode counts, it leaves us uncertain whether The Abandons will fully embody Sutter’s original vision for the series.

There isn’t a specific launch date for “The Abandons” yet, but it’s anticipated to premiere around the middle of 2025, given that production wraps up in Calgary towards the end of this month and post-production follows afterwards.
