The Rings of Power Showrunners Shut Down Major Dark Wizard Theory

As a long-time fan of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth saga, I have to say that the mystery surrounding the Dark Wizard played by Ciarán Hinds in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has been one of the most intriguing aspects of the show for me. Ever since he made his first appearance, I’ve been convinced that he was none other than Saruman, given his resemblance to Christopher Lee’s portrayal and his familiarity with Gandalf.

Season 2 of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” has introduced fresh characters based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s original work, but one enigmatic wizard’s true identity is yet to be fully revealed. Fans were thrilled with the finale’s disclosure that the character portrayed by Daniel Weyman, previously known as The Stranger, is indeed what many had suspected. However, the enigmatic figure played by Ciarán Hinders in “The Rings of Power” continues to be a mysterious entity whose exact name remains undisclosed. The show’s creators have hinted at his true identity, and there are speculations that he could potentially be the notorious villain from the “Lord of the Rings” movies – Sauron.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, showrunners Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne have hinted strongly that the Dark Wizard in ‘The Rings of Power’ is not Saruman, who was played by Christopher Lee in Peter Jackson’s trilogy. The theory suggests a younger Saruman as the character portrayed by Hinds, one of five potential wizards in Middle-earth (excluding Gandalf). However, the makers of ‘The Rings of Power’ suggest that this theory is unlikely to hold true.

“I will certainly make a statement publicly. Considering Middle-earth’s past events, it would be extremely unlikely for this to be Saruman.

J.D. Payne: “If not impossible.”

In the events unfolding in Middle-earth, a pivotal part is reserved for the enigmatic Dark Wizard. This wizard, who’s now finding his footing, has been foretold by Tom Bombadil that he will confront both the Dark Wizard and Sauron. As of now, the identity of the Dark Wizard remains undisclosed, but it seems highly unlikely that it would be Saruman, given the improbability it defies the fundamental laws of nature and science.

J.D. Payne: “Besides Radagast the Brown, there are also two mysterious blue wizards – but we won’t reveal any more details about them.

To set the record straight, it’s amusing how the Dark Wizard bears a striking resemblance to Saruman and even refers to Gandalf as an “old acquaintance.” However, the show creators have made it clear that this isn’t Saruman. Nonetheless, it’s intriguing to learn that The Rings of Power won’t merely retell the origin stories of famous Lord of the Rings characters. Instead, the series delves deeply into J.R.R. Tolkien’s mythos, exploring the largely untold tales of the Second Age.

So, Who Exactly Could The Dark Wizard Be?

In essence, determining the identity of the Dark Wizard isn’t too challenging as there are only five potential names. Three primary candidates are Radagast the Brown and the two unnamed blue wizards, who were sent to aid Middle-earth against Sauron. While Radagast has been portrayed before in “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” he is distinct from the character described by Hinds. It remains uncertain if any of these magical figures will appear in “The Rings of Power.” However, if the Dark Wizard turns out to be one of the blue wizards, Alatar or Pallando, the show would mark a fresh milestone for Tolkien-inspired live-action productions.

Instead of envisioning the Dark Wizard transforming into the radically distinct Radagast the Brown, it appears more plausible that Hinds will play a blue wizard in The Rings of Power. Given the gaps in Tolkien’s framework about the Second Age and the enigmatic Alatar and Pallando, this series has the opportunity to introduce an entirely original wizard character, offering something fresh within the Lord of the Rings universe. Despite his Saruman-like appearance, viewers might get a chance to explore uncharted territories in the world of The Lord of the Rings.
