teamLab Crafts a ‘Field of Wind, Rain and Sun’ Amid Industrial Structures

As a long-time enthusiast of digital art, I must admit that I’ve been utterly captivated by teamLab’s latest creation – “Field of Wind, Rain and Sun” in Osaka. Having traveled far and wide to witness various art installations, this one stands out as a unique blend of technology and nature, transforming the mundane into the extraordinary.

In Osaka, teamLab reveals a fresh exhibition titled “teamLab: Field of Wind, Rain and Sun” following their conversion of an abandoned urban site into a lush green landscape. Commissioned by Can Can Factory to incorporate art within its expanded premises, this project resembles vacant lots frequent in Japanese residential areas. The resulting installation offers a tranquil haven amidst industrial structures, where the effects of wind, rain, and sunlight are subtly enhanced.

As stated by the art collective, the upcoming exhibition shares strong links with “teamLab Phenomena,” a forthcoming museum opening in Abu Dhabi that utilizes an “environmental phenomena” concept. Takashi Kudo from teamLab explains, “The artworks within ‘teamLab Phenomena’ do not stand alone; they are shaped by their environment.” He further clarifies, “Similar to natural objects like stones, these works have a structure that is sustained only through interaction with their surroundings, which in turn helps maintain their form.

At the exhibition, you’ll find “Enso of the Sun,” a digital art piece that requires clear skies, no wind, and specifically, the exact time of midday to be appreciated. This artwork is situated on the side of the field, and the best view can be had from the top of a small staircase within the field itself. From this vantage point, visitors will observe a stunning rainbow circle formed by the sun at high noon and specialized machinery interacting harmoniously.

As a gamer, I’d rephrase it like this: “In the virtual worlds I explore, the essential elements of air, water, and light take on extraordinary forms, becoming breathtaking art pieces. Their borders are blurred, ever-changing, and intertwined with their surroundings. As long as these environments thrive, so does the art they create.

The immersive art installation titled “Field of Wind, Rain and Sun” by teamLab can be enjoyed exclusively by guests who have pre-booked their seats at “A Cafe in the Field of the Can Can Factory.” Reservations must be made on the cafe’s official website.
