Reese Witherspoon Recalls How She “Couldn’t Keep the Lights On” in Early Days of Production Company Despite ‘Big Little Lies,’ ‘Gone Girl’ Success

As a dedicated fan of Reese Witherspoon, I find myself constantly inspired and awestruck by her journey and the impact she’s made not only in Hollywood but also in the lives of countless women. From her humble beginnings hustling for roles to standing on stage at the Shine Away conference, it’s clear that Reese is a force to be reckoned with.

On Saturday, Reese Witherspoon’s media company, Hello Sunshine, hosted its second annual Shine Away event. This gathering offered ample opportunities for interactions not only with Reese herself but also with her high-profile peers.

700 guests were invited to Los Angeles’ Nya Studios for a two-day event designed to empower and connect women. This included panel discussions, activations, and programming. Following this, Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern, and Octavia Spencer had a chat. They spoke about their strong bond and the mutual support they offer each other, both within and beyond the industry. In a jest, Dern commented, “In essence, I consult Reese on everything, from my romantic affairs to job decisions.

As a devoted admirer, I’d like to share some insights from the remarkable Reese Witherspoon. Over the past few years, she’s been instrumental in bringing us a host of captivating productions such as The Morning Show, The Last Thing He Told Me, Tiny Beautiful Things, Truth Be Told, and Daisy Jones & The Six. Recently, she opened up about her early days as a producer, starting Hello Sunshine at the ripe age of 34, even though she candidly admitted that she was unsure of what she was embarking upon.

As a gamer navigating through the labyrinth of Hollywood for two decades, I never took my eyes off the immediate challenges – landing roles, securing jobs. But then, one day at 34, when I had built enough experience and financial stability, I paused to take a broader look at the game itself.

Despite her apprehensions, Witherspoon openly confessed, “It was terrifying as I wasn’t certain if I’d recover my investment. Each morning, I’d wake up thinking, ‘Oh dear, I won’t get my money back.’ Yet, I opted to stake on myself and risk losing that money through effort. Every day, I felt like, ‘I am my own chance at the jackpot.’

The star reflected on a time following the triumph of “Big Little Lies” in 2017, which garnered 16 Emmy nominations and eight victories. This success came after she had produced both “Gone Girl” and “Wild” in 2014.

After wrapping up “Big Little Lies”, Reese Witherspoon found herself in a challenging predicament. She had just launched her first company, but despite its success (earning $600 million at the box office), she was struggling to cover basic expenses like keeping the lights on with only four employees. The accountant’s call, informing her that the profits from producing three movies weren’t enough to sustain the team, served as an eye-opening wake-up call. Witherspoon realized she needed guidance and a solid business plan, which led to the recruitment of Sarah Harden as CEO at Hello Sunshine. Under Harden’s leadership, they established necessary infrastructure and hired additional executives to help with the company’s growth.

Dern pointed out that the female-focused environment on “Big Little Lies” enabled the actors to discuss topics they hadn’t before. She recalled standing with Witherspoon and co-star Meryl Streep, and they began talking about finances, a subject she had never previously broached with anyone. At the time, she was going through a challenging period in her life, raising children on her own, and found herself with numerous questions. The advice she received from them was crucial: she needed to consult a female financial advisor to discuss these issues. Their initial conversation revolved around caring for elderly parents and helping children navigate through school – topics that had never been brought up in conversation with her before.

Dern mentioned that her friendships with other actresses are like beautiful romantic tales, yet she was warned not to bond closely, so it’s best to keep things simple and have only one woman present at a time.

Spencer pointed out that she had often heard the assumption that as women working together on a film set, they’re typically one at a time due to competition. However, she shared her experience of finding the exact opposite when there are several women on set – instead of being competitive, they formed strong friendships, as exemplified by her long-standing friendships with Melissa McCarthy, Allison Janney, and Viola Davis.

Witherspoon stressed the significance of backing female creators by audiences and consumers, saying, “When you come across a series on Netflix or any platform, simply click ‘like.’ The ‘like’ function has more impact than you might think. Click it because it influences the earnings of the women behind the production. They track all that data… Even if you add it to your watchlist, such a small action makes a difference.

Following the panel discussion, Reese Witherspoon engaged in a talk with Sara Blakely, the founder of Spanx, about managing their two women-led companies. Reflecting on the early stages of Hello Sunshine, she recalled, “I faced quite a struggle to convince people that my success wasn’t just luck. My first two books, ‘Gone Girl’ and ‘Wild,’ which I optioned, both reached No. 1 within three months. Yet, there were still doubts: ‘Yes, but can you do it again?’

In her statement, Witherspoon mentioned that when she and Kidman decided to produce Big Little Lies, one of their financial supporters contacted her manager prior to filming, questioning the viability of the television show starring Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman. The investor asked, “Is it really going to succeed?”, implying a significant risk was being taken. However, as it turned out, the series became an extraordinary success that wasn’t just captivating for women viewers, but also attracted male audiences.

On Saturday, Olivia Munn, Amanda Kloots, comedian Heather McMahan, athletes Diana Flores, Alex Morgan, and Candace Parker participated, along with a musical performance by The Castellows. Naomi Watts is set to perform on Sunday. The second Shine Away event was sponsored by AT&T for its second year running.
