Reflecting upon my early days in Mumbai, one of the most indelible memories I carry is the unforgettable evening I spent at Sunil and Nargis Dutt’s home. As a greenhorn in the city, I was in awe of their warmth and humility, qualities that were as rare then as they are now.
In a recent conversation, actor Ranjeet spoke about an unforgettable occasion that took place during one of Sunil and Nargis Dutt’s gatherings in their Mumbai residence from his initial days in the city. He reminisced warmly on the evening when Nargis reprimanded everyone for consuming alcohol late into the night. Moreover, Ranjeet was surprised to observe Nargis, who had starred in Mother India, personally serving food to guests at the party.
On Timeout with Ankit, the actor recounted an occasion where he was a guest and mentioned that Sunil Dutt’s friends had visited. Nargis cooked a unique dish called ‘Matka Gosht’ for their gathering. He also shared it was just his second day in Mumbai when this took place.
Until approximately 2 o’clock at night, the food continued to heat up and then I heard her voice, scolding us. We all stood up in response. “Enough of this! The food won’t keep heating over and over.” Afterwards, everyone went inside. I consider myself lucky for having encountered them.
That night, Ranjeet recalled the delightful ambiance when Nargis herself attended to every guest. He was taken aback by the sight of this well-known figure managing domestic chores and working late into the night to guarantee the comfort of the visitors.
Sunil shared the story of how he was served meat by him. He clarified to the actor that he doesn’t consume non-vegetarian food, but Sunil explained that Mrs. Dutt had personally prepared it. In a joking manner, Sunil also added that vegetarians like himself were no different from goats, who only eat plants.
When I spotted Nargis, standing at 2 in the morning, prepared to cater to the guests, it left me astonished. Given her status as a prominent actress, comparable to Mother India’s star, I assumed she would be taking a well-deserved rest during the night hours. However, there she was, wide awake and serving everyone, even instructing her assistant to add spices to the lentils, and later personally dishing out food for us all. It left me in disbelief when she served parathas! He chuckled.
Sunil Dutt and Nargis got married in 1958. Tragically, Nargis was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 1980 and passed away the next year. Remarkably, their son Sanjay Dutt began his acting career with Rocky just a short time after her death. Sunil Dutt himself lived until 2005.
