Jigra director Vasan Bala recalls he ‘wished’ to work with Alia Bhatt after Gangubai Kathiawadi; 'We can keep discussing other things too'

As a die-hard fan of Vasan Bala and his exceptional storytelling prowess, I find myself utterly enthralled by this latest turn of events in Bollywood. The man behind the critically acclaimed film “Tumhari Sulu” and now the upcoming masterpiece “Jigra”, has once again found himself in the thick of things, much like his characters who always seem to be navigating through the labyrinthine streets of Mumbai.

Following Karan Johar, Jigra director Vasan Bala expressed his long-standing desire to collaborate with Alia Bhatt, which materialized with her role in Gangubai Kathiawadi, released in 2022. Additionally, Bala subtly addressed the ongoing debate regarding Alia Bhatt’s casting in the film, stemming from comments made by the director during an interview about Johar sending an unfinished script of his movie to the actress without his consent, expressing dissatisfaction with this action.

Today, October 6th, Vasan Bala utilized his Instagram account to post a composite image of two pictures showcasing large billboards. One of the billboards displayed the poster of Gangubai Kathiawadi, starring Alia Bhatt, while the other one showcased their upcoming joint venture, Jigra.

For those unfamiliar, Vasan Bala reminisced about a time when he showed an early version of Jigra to the film’s producer, who unwittingly sent it to Alia. Vasan expressed his displeasure, saying, “I was really disappointed. I thought, ‘At least you could have done a spellcheck or grammar check before sending it.’ So, I felt frustrated when I found out you had shared it.” Alia Bhatt mentioned that she initially perceived the script as incomplete upon receiving it.

This action sparked a flood of criticism against Karan Johar, leading to discussions about nepotism and preferential treatment in the Indian film industry. At the same time, the movie producer wrote an extensive post addressing the rumors circulating online.

Under Vasan Bala’s direction, the upcoming film titled “Jigra” features Alia Bhatt and Vedang Rain in the main roles. This production is a collaboration between Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions and Alia’s Eternal Sunshine Productions. The release date for this movie is set on October 11, 2024. Interestingly, it will compete with Rajkummar Rao and Triptii Dimri’s film “Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video” which is also scheduled to hit the screens on the same day.
