As a long-time enthusiast of the cinematic arts, I am thrilled to welcome Emilie Anthonis to her new role as the president and managing director of the Motion Picture Association (MPA) for the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) regions. Her extensive background in the European audiovisual sector, coupled with her reputation as a staunch advocate for the creative industry, makes her an ideal choice to take over from Stan McCoy, who has led the MPA in the region for over a decade.
As I step up, taking over from Stan McCoy, I’m thrilled to announce my new role as President and Managing Director of the Motion Picture Association (MPA), specifically for our regions in Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA). The MPA made this exciting announcement on Monday. As a passionate gamer and movie enthusiast, I can’t wait to start this incredible journey!
On New Year’s Day, 2025, Anthonis will assume leadership of the MPA in this region. After more than a decade at the helm, McCoy is choosing to step away from his role as leader.
As I hand over the reins, I take immense pride in reflecting on the past ten years leading what is indisputably one of Europe, Middle East, and Africa’s most accomplished trade associations, excelling in public policy, antipiracy, and various other domains of expertise. This, as expressed in a statement I made.
As I step into this fresh role within our MPA family, I’m thrilled to contribute while upholding the collaborative ethos that Stan has instilled across our MPA EMEA ventures. Europe, being a pivotal market for our MPA members, boasts a rich narrative heritage and a longstanding tradition of partnerships in this region. I can’t wait to be part of this incredible journey!
Before enrolling in the MPA in 2017, Anthonis held the position of director for legal and public affairs at the Association of Commercial Television in Europe (ACT). Her professional background also includes time as an internal lawyer at Viacom, as well as practicing IP law with a focus on copyright and media law at a Brussels-based law firm.
Charles Rivkin, head of the MPA, commended Anthony’s new position with assurance, highlighting her substantial background in Europe’s audio-visual field and her standing as a champion for the creative industry.
Emilie has a long history in the MPA and European audiovisual field and is widely recognized as a strong champion for the creative industry. She is knowledgeable in policymaking, influential in European political circles, respected, and honest,” stated Rivkin. “She is well-prepared to manage our operations and act as a powerful voice for our sector within this region. I have complete faith in her skills to continue advancing the MPA’s goals, leading policy initiatives, and supporting member studios in their collaborations with key partners.
Located in Brussels, Anthonis has been assigned to work under Gail MacKinnon, a senior executive vice president of global policy & government affairs. In this new role, Anthonis will focus on promoting the MPA’s objectives, managing policy interactions, and cultivating partnerships between member studios and relevant stakeholders across Europe and beyond.
The MPA advocates for the interests of its film industry partners, which include Netflix, Paramount Global, Sony Pictures, Universal Studios, Walt Disney Studios, Amazon’s MGM Studios, and Warner Bros. Discovery, to lawmakers.
