'We Hope It's Not Gratuitous': Legend Of Vox Machina Stars Weigh In On Not Fading To Black On Spicy Scenes

As a long-time fan who’s seen my fair share of fantasy series, I can confidently say that The Legend of Vox Machina Season 3 is a breath of fresh air. The first three episodes have been nothing short of exhilarating, with the cast delivering performances that are as raw and unfiltered as the show itself.

Warning: spoilers are ahead for the first three episodes of The Legend of Vox Machina Season 3.

The early episodes of Season 3 for “The Legend of Vox Machina” are now available on Prime Video, and the unique characters from Vox Machina didn’t miss a beat in the 2024 TV lineup as they tackle three dragons, seek lost artifacts, face the return of Anna Ripley and Orthax, and even journey to hell. Despite this action-packed schedule, there’s still room for romance, and these initial episodes didn’t disappoint! The cast of Critical Role, who produce “Legend of Vox Machina”, spoke candidly with TopMob about the blend of passionate and gory scenes on Prime Video.

From the initial pairings spanning seasons one and two, it appears that Vax (Liam O’Brien) and Keyleth (Marisha Ray) are facing troubles due to the Matron of Ravens, while Pike (Ashley Johnson) and Scanlan (Sam Riegel) have other important matters to attend to. As for Vex (Laura Bailey) and Percy (Taliesin Jaffe), the show has been quite explicit in depicting their relationship, unlike others that typically cut away during sex or violent scenes. To start off, Sam Riegel, who plays Scanlan, spoke about this…

This production is the one we’ve been eager to create, and it’s also the kind of show we’d enjoy watching. It contains mature themes, but our aim isn’t to be excessive or sensational. Instead, we aim to present just the right amount that feels authentic without crossing boundaries.

Initially, I found Vex and Percy’s intense “before or after” scenes quite surprising, but considering my background of watching a lot of network TV where explicit content is usually toned down, it’s not uncommon to see less graphic violence and fewer strong language. However, this doesn’t mean that Vox Machina‘s use of Prime Video’s freedom to present more adult content is excessive or unnecessary.

Matt Mercer, the Dungeon Master of Critical Role who also lends his voice to various Season 3 characters including Orthax, has previously discussed modifications in the original Dungeons & Dragons campaign. He elaborated on their decision to avoid darkening the narrative for violent or steamy scenes by saying: “We don’t want to go too dark with violence or sexual content.

I’m thankful for our successful collaboration with Prime Video team, who have consistently backed our creative decisions and helped us bring our vision to life. Unlike traditional network television, where creators often struggle with network notes changing the essence of their work, Prime Video has been an exceptional partner, encouraging us and adding valuable input to our ideas. Now, we have the freedom to use as many expletives as we wish and create more adult-oriented scenes.

Speaking of the actors lending their voices to the most heated scene across the first three episodes of The Legend of Vox Machina Season 3, Laura Bailey mentioned that it feels organic for this series not to cut to black, and Taliesin Jaffe also shared his thoughts on the matter.

Without a doubt, this has been indispensable in the narrative we’ve crafted. It’s hard to fathom how parts of our tale might have unfolded differently if not for its inclusion.

Travis Willingham, the man behind Grog and the CEO of Critical Role, has generally leaned towards portraying grand, violent battle sequences rather than more romantic or steamy scenes. It appears this trend will persist with Grog joining Vax, Pike, Keyleth, and Scanlan on Team Hell in Season 3. Willingham expressed his eagerness for the fans’ reactions to the new season, and he also discussed the freedom Critical Role has in not needing to censor or cut to black during intimate scenes, unlike some shows on other platforms.

We thrive on it, and that’s what makes it so captivating. Prime Video have been fantastic collaborators since the beginning, constantly urging us to push boundaries and take risks. They’ve given us the green light to create shows that resonate with their audience, which we enjoy watching as well. From the get-go, there were discussions about toning down some elements to make it more suitable for a broader audience, particularly families. However, our response was always a firm ‘No.’

Previously, Matt Mercer playfully advised viewers to watch Season 3 alongside their parents. However, it wasn’t necessarily required for Critical Role to create a family-friendly series like The Legend of Vox Machina. Willingham further clarified…

We aimed to remain authentic to our unique humor style, which might seem a bit unconventional at times. Yet, it also helps in telling a genuine story, particularly in the realm of adult animation. I believe there aren’t many shows that manage the balance of tones we do, blending classic fantasy elements with contemporary language delivery. This is essentially our specialty.

Luckily, there’s still a lot more of Critical Role’s main content left in Season 3, with another nine episodes yet to air. The group’s battles against the dragons and the reappearance of Percy’s demon and adversary, Anna Ripley, are upcoming events that we’ll have to watch unfold. By the end of Episode 3, the party has separated, so it’s unclear how far they’ll progress in their endeavors.

With Grog, Scanlan, Vax, Keyleth, and Pike embarking on a journey to hell in pursuit of another vestige, Vex and Percy remained behind in Draconia with Allura and Kima. It wasn’t long before Team Draconia faced calamity following a treachery and the emergence of the dragon Vorugal. As for Team Hell, they might not receive assistance from the Everlight if Pike’s last glance at her sacred emblem is any hint.

Essentially, a multitude of potential pitfalls lie ahead for Vox Machina! Don’t forget to catch the latest episodes every Thursday on Prime Video, including the complete first and second seasons.
