As a lifelong observer of the intricate dance between power and politics, I’ve always been fascinated by figures who shake up the status quo – for better or worse. And Donald Trump, love him or loathe him, is undeniably one such figure. So when I heard about The Apprentice, a biopic of Trump in his heyday, I couldn’t resist diving headfirst into the fray.

It’s a fact that Donald Trump will find himself featured in a movie titled “The Apprentice,” directed by Ali Abbasi. This biopic doesn’t portray a flattering image of the ex-president. Recently, the director has expressed his views on Trump’s notorious New York City hotel ventures, and he is quite critical about their quality. As the U.S. election nears, “The Apprentice” is shaping up to be an essential watch for those who are invested in the forthcoming years.

According to Variety, Ali Abbasi had a Zoom chat with the publication where he admitted that he was residing at the Trump International Hotel in New York City. The director of “The Apprentice” humorously referred to his choice of lodging as serendipitous, calling it a “heavenly match.” Being an Iranian-Danish filmmaker, Abbasi saw it fitting to test one of the numerous ventures stemming from Trump’s past business endeavors.

“It seems fitting, given that I have ties with Trump International, starred in a movie featuring Trump, and I consider myself an international figure. This collaboration feels like it was destined to happen. However, I must admit, I was expecting a more luxurious experience than what I’ve encountered.

Unfortunate for Abassi, and hardly a shock to others, the condition of the establishment left him entirely unimpressed. Quite frankly, he deemed the hotel room he occupied as “filthy,” and made particular note of various aspects that caught his attention during his stay.

The item isn’t exactly a Trump-branded lamp; it appears quite simple. The floor could use a good sweep, and the outlets seem somewhat grubby. For an executive suite, it doesn’t live up to the usual standards I associate with ‘Trump’. As an architect by training, this kind of setup isn’t what I would anticipate from such a prestigious brand.

The movie “The Apprentice” chronicles Donald Trump’s journey as a businessman in the 1970s and 80s, focusing mainly on his real estate career. Although some people are familiar with his failed endeavors such as Trump Steaks and Trump Vodka, the Trump International Hotel, among others, is well-known for its association with the ex-president. It’s understandable why Abassi wanted to check out the hotel, given its questionable reputation for not meeting expectations of luxury.

The Apprentice is Not a Political Hit Piece

Regardless of Donald Trump and his legal team’s pleas for postponement or cancellation, The Apprentice movie remains undeterred in its release. Unlike a sanitized portrayal of Trump’s history, this film does not shy away from depicting some of his most questionable actions. For example, it features a scene where Trump (portrayed by Sebastian Stan) is shown to have assaulted his former wife Ivana (Maria Bakalova), and also delves into his relationship with manipulative political fixer Roy Cohn (Jeremy Strong). Contrary to initial assumptions, this film is not merely a character assassination of the ex-president, but rather an honest portrayal of his past and the contemporary political landscape.

In a previous statement, the director of “The Apprentice” clarified that the show wasn’t intended as a political attack, but rather an exploration of various aspects of Trump’s rise to prominence within American society. As a foreigner, Abbasi has had the opportunity to delve deeply into this country and its political system. The film serves as an examination of Trump, who is both a divisive figure and a former president with a criminal conviction, while also reflecting the world around him. Moreover, actor Sebastian Stan expressed his belief that there are elements within Trump that resonate with all of us, specifically darker aspects of our own psyches that deserve honest introspection. Viewers who hold strong opinions about Trump, either positive or negative, may find something to appreciate in “The Apprentice,” with the latter group potentially finding more reasons to reflect upon their feelings.
