After Stana Katic Returned To Network TV For Fox's Murder In A Small Town, I Now Want To Revisit Castle

As a dedicated fan of crime dramas who has followed Stana Katic’s career since her days as Kate Beckett on ABC’s Castle, I must admit that her guest appearance on Fox’s Murder in a Small Town was nothing short of captivating. Despite the significant differences between Zoe Strachan and Kate Beckett, Katic managed to breathe life into this new character in a way that left me yearning for more of her on-screen chemistry with another lead.

Spoilers ahead for the third episode of Fox’s Murder in a Small Town, called “A Chill Rain.”

In the upcoming TV lineup for 2024, the newest installment of “Murder in a Small Town” featured Stana Katic as a special guest star, portraying Zoe Strachan – a character quite different from her previous role, Kate Beckett, on ABC’s “Castle.” Although it has been several years since she co-starred with Nathan Fillion on “Castle,” which ended in 2016, this was Katic’s comeback to network television. Her performance was captivating enough for me to immediately verify if I could rewatch “Castle” using a Hulu subscription (which is available).

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but feel drawn back to the captivating charm of Stana Katic, even though her characters in the Fox series and whatever new show she graces are worlds apart.

Who Stana Katic Played On Murder In A Small Town

In this latest episode of the new Fox series, featuring Rossif Sutherland and Kristin Kreuk in a unique take on crime drama, our actress portrayed Zoe Strachan. It soon became evident that Zoe was concealing information from Alberg, who was investigating the murder of her brother. As he delved deeper, he began to see through her deceptions and charms, revealing a gaping hole within her as he mused, “There’s something incomplete about Zoe.

Involved was an attempt to set fire to both a young boy and Alberg, with the fire coming dangerously close. Arson was her particular skill, but this time she failed to kill anyone in the blaze. The police were able to apprehend her alive, yet it appears that “Murder in a Small Town” will not reopen the case or invite Zoe back due to its unlikely resolution.

Viewers won’t struggle to spot Stana Katic on television screens, and it’s not only because of “Absentia,” which was available for three seasons on Amazon Prime Video. In general, “Absentia” seems to be a more fitting platform for showcasing her acting abilities. However, her appearance in “Murder in a Small Town” reminded me of the crime drama she starred in previously.

Why I Might Revisit Castle Now

The reputation of the TV series, known as Castle, has been somewhat blemished due to the circumstances surrounding its sudden ending in 2016 after eight seasons. Despite speculation about a potential Season 9, only Nathan Fillion was said to have been asked back among the main cast, with Stana Katic being excluded. At that time, she expressed her feelings to fans through a heartfelt message, and Fillion also extended his well wishes to her in a separate statement. Several years after her dismissal and the show’s cancellation, Katic revealed her feelings of puzzlement about the entire ordeal but remains grateful for having been involved in that project.

To be honest, I haven’t had a strong desire to revisit the TV series “Castle” since it ended, and the criminal character played by Stana Katic in “Murder in a Small Town” is quite distinct from Detective Kate Beckett. However, her return to a prime-time TV crime show with a strong chemistry between leads (the chemistry between Sutherland and Kreuk being one of the reasons he joined the show) reminds me of her days on “Castle“. Despite its somewhat abrupt ending for her character, she did some excellent work on that show.

Fortunately, you can easily come across a Castle these days. In fact, ABC’s popular drama series, which also stars Rossif Sutherland and Kristin Kreuk, is now streaming on Hulu, the same platform that hosts “Murder in a Small Town”. Don’t forget to catch their performances every Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.
