As a lifelong fan of J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic masterpiece, the Lord of the Rings, I can confidently say that the Season 2 finale of The Rings of Power was an absolute feast for the eyes and heart. Having grown up on the original trilogy, seeing the connections between the prequel series and the beloved books was nothing short of exhilarating.

In the final episode of Season 2 of “The Rings of Power”, some clear links were established between this prequel series and the classic “Lord of the Rings”. For instance, The Stranger was unmasked as Gandalf, and Míriel handed Elendil the sword Narsil, which will later be reforged into Andúril and bestowed upon Aragorn. During an interview with the cast about these references, I discussed the significance of this scene with Cynthia Addai-Robinson regarding her character’s interaction with the legendary sword. She explained why it was important for both dedicated “Lord of the Rings” fans as well as casual viewers.
Addai-Robinson expressed that hearing the moment being called a “lore drop” brought out her inner childhood excitement.

If you were raised on the epic films of The Lord of the Rings, artifacts such as the One Ring, Gandalf’s staff, and Andúril (to name a few) carry significant weight, and experiencing these items up close would undoubtedly be an awe-inspiring moment.
It’s equally exciting for spectators like us to spot familiar characters and items from our favorite series, such as Rings of Power. Given that I’ve just re-watched The Return of the King, my excitement was palpable when Elendil received Narsil in the finale. This moment reminded me of the conversation between Aragorn and Elrond, as Aragorn held the sword:
Sauron won’t have let go of the memory of Elendil’s sword. The shattered blade, once again whole, will make its way back to Minas Tirith.
The way they presented Elrond and Míriel bestowing swords upon Aragorn and Elendil, respectively, is strikingly similar. The tight shots of them both raising the swords to their faces, along with their expressions, is truly captivating.
If I hadn’t recently re-watched the Lord of the Rings movies, I might not have recognized the reference. This scene, as the actress informed me, was designed to be understood by viewers who may not be familiar with the lore. She elaborated:
In addition, I believed it was essential for the scene to maintain its impact on those unaware of the sword’s symbolism or significance in lore. I often use my mother as a benchmark, asking myself if she would react when we say Narsil. Essentially, the focus is on the meaning of Narsil in that specific moment – the importance of her bestowing it upon him represents the transfer of responsibility. She can’t accompany him because her duty lies there, and his mission is to unite people, start a revolution, and carry the sword along with it.
It’s clear how significant their interaction is, regardless of one’s knowledge about future events. Elendil and Míriel’s emotional farewell underscores their deep love for each other. They are preparing for two monumental wars to uphold justice, which only adds to the poignancy. The sword serving as a key element in what lies ahead is merely an additional layer of intrigue.
Whether you are a massive fan of the books, movies and show or you’re only into the Amazon series, no matter what, as Addai-Robinson pointed out, this passing of the sword carries major significance.
As a die-hard fan of Middle Earth, I’m genuinely excited about what Míriel, Elendil, and that legendary sword will bring to the table in Season 3 of Rings of Power. I can hardly contain my anticipation as Míriel digs her heels in Númenor, ready to face off against Pharazôn, while he embarks on a quest to find his lost sons. Fingers crossed that this narrative arc will culminate in an epic showdown, where Elendil’s son wields the reforged Narsil to sever the One Ring from Sauron’s grasp. Can’t wait to witness the magic unfold!
