As a film critic with a lifelong passion for cinema and politics, I must say that The Apprentice has certainly piqued my interest. Having followed Donald Trump’s career since his rise to fame on reality TV, it will be fascinating to see Sebastian Stan’s portrayal of the contentious figure in this biopic.

A day prior to its North American debut, “The Apprentice” made a strong entrance on Rotten Tomatoes, garnering an impressive score, in spite of the ongoing controversy surrounding the Donald Trump biopic. The film boasts Sebastian Stan as Trump, Jeremy Strong portraying his mentor Roy Cohn, Maria Bakalova stepping into the role of Ivana Trump, and Martin Donovan playing Fred Trump, the family patriarch. The Briarcliff production has been a contentious topic since its announcement in 2018, however, tensions have significantly escalated lately due to its strategic release timing, just before the 2024 Presidential election.

Checking Rotten Tomatoes, we find that The Apprentice initially earned a Fresh certification rating of 80% from 100 reviewers. As for the audience score, it remains undisclosed at this moment. With its explosive theme, it’s intriguing to see how it fares with viewers once the movie has had a few days to settle in and make an impact over the weekend.

Instead of seeking a critical piece that belittles Trump’s presidency persona from 2016, it would be more fruitful to look elsewhere for material depicting him as a self-centered clown (maybe his Truth Social account?). The upcoming show, The Apprentice, however, will highlight the formative years of this controversial figure, zeroing in on the 70s and 80s when he climbed to become one of New York’s toughest real estate tycoons.

What Critics Are Saying About The Apprentice

Despite Donald Trump not personally addressing the matter yet, his legal team issued a cease-and-desist order earlier this year to halt the release of The Apprentice, citing it as a “fabrication of untruths.” Members of his campaign have dismissed the movie as “rubbish,” but if Ali Abbasi’s film manages to garner a good rating and decent box office earnings this weekend, they might attempt to reframe their role in its success, a tactic Trump and his associates occasionally employ.

Regarding the movie, it seems that critics across the political spectrum have generally agreed on their evaluations so far. For instance, Britt Hayes from MovieWeb gave it a 4 out of 5, describing it as a film that “captures the essence” of Trump, transitioning from a darkly comedic character study into a chilling horror depiction. Radheyan Simonpillai of The Globe and Mail noted an inviting warmth in the Jedi master-young padawan dynamic between Cohn and Trump, a relationship that largely benefits from Strong’s performance. Bill Goodykoontz of the Arizona Republic concurred, adding that “The Apprentice” is well-made, entertaining (especially for fans of good acting), and not at all surprising.

Generally speaking, while many reviewers have commended the film for the strong acting by Stan and Strong, The Apprentice isn’t receiving all positive reviews. Sean Burns of WBUR’s Arts & Culture described it as a “film that falls into the emptiness at its heart,” and Michael Atkinson of LA Weekly stated that it’s “a dull and predictable biopic with ordinary historical appearances.

Without a doubt, The Apprentice is bound to capture everyone’s attention this weekend, sparking conversations on social media platforms and grabbing attention from news outlets nationwide. As we approach one of the most critical elections in American history, it’s certain to make waves.
