For The First Time On Outer Banks, John B. Is Feeling Apprehensive About The Treasure Hunt, And Chase Stokes Explained Why

As a dedicated fan who’s been riding the rollercoaster of emotions that is Outer Banks since its debut, I can confidently say that the latest season has brought a refreshing twist to our beloved characters. John B., who has always been the driving force, seems to have taken a backseat this time around, with Rudy Pankow’s JJ steering the ship.

Beware! Plot twists from the first half of Season 4 for the series ‘Outer Banks’ lie ahead. In case you’re behind, catch up by streaming it with your active Netflix membership.

From the very beginning, John B has been the one propelling the Outer Banks’ adventures. Yet, things have changed for the newest season airing on Netflix’s 2024 lineup. Chase Stokes‘ character seems hesitant this time around, and surprisingly, Rudy Pankow’s JJ is taking charge. With that in mind, I posed a question to Stokes about his character’s state of mind in this season.

During the course of the first three seasons of Outer Banks, John B. frequently encountered life-threatening situations, yet he was persistently driven to locate the hidden treasure and draw nearer to his father. However, at the culmination of OBX Season 3, he suffered the loss of his father and obtained a substantial amount of money for discovering El Dorado. Consequently, in this new phase, he is striving to prevent further losses – be they personal or financial – of what they’ve unearthed.

During my conversation with Chase Stokes about his character’s hesitance towards embarking on another treasure hunt (as discussed in TopMob’s interviews with the cast of Outer Banks), the actor shared this information with me.

It seems to me that the difficult experiences and decisions he’s faced, some of which have endangered others, have left a heavy burden on him since their discovery of El Dorado in Season 3.

It’s understandable that John B., having experienced such hardships – losing his father, brushing with death multiple times, and witnessing his friends do the same, including the time the Pogues got stranded on an island – would feel the weight of it all heavily once he had a chance to reflect. With their lives saved by this gold and finally establishing a home in the Outer Banks, Stokes’ character values the stability they’ve achieved deeply and is determined not to let it slip away.

He emphasized that point while talking to me too, as he explained:

For him, the emotional toll of such a great loss seems to overshadow the worth of the gold. This burden, heavy on his shoulders, is causing him to reconsider many of his past decisions more carefully, a trait that was once characterized by impulsiveness. Now, it appears he’s leaning towards contemplation rather than immediate action, a change in behavior he might discuss with JJ.

It’s clear that John B. has been focusing more on defense in recent episodes. Despite his love for adventure, he seems less inclined to take the same level of risks as he did initially. This shift could be due to his desire to protect the home he’s created with his friends and maintain the harmony they’ve found.

For example, if JJ risks their entire fortune on a race, John B. becomes genuinely concerned and scared. Later, when Rudy Pankow’s character asks Stokes to assist by participating in a dirt bike race, he feels quite nervous about the whole situation (though he eventually agrees).

Towards the end of Part 1, John B appears distressed as he fails to fire at the villain. The scene shifts to his last moments with his father, underscoring the intensity of his emotional turmoil. Throughout this fresh journey, his past trauma significantly influences his perspective.

In Season 4, I find myself standing alongside the Pogues, who’ve grown up quite a bit. As John B., I can’t help but feel the weight of what’s at stake – we have more to lose than ever before. So, yeah, there’s an undercurrent of apprehension as we embark on this hunt, and I don’t think it’ll dissipate anytime soon. Buckle up, folks! We’re diving headfirst into Season 4, Part 2 on November 7, 2024 – can’t wait to see what unfolds next!
