Why Wearing A Buzz Lightyear Costume For Disney’s College Program Gave Sasheer Zamata A ‘Panic Attack’

As a fan who has followed Sasheer Zamata’s career from her Disney College Program days to her current success in the Marvel universe, I can’t help but be in awe of her journey. From the Buzz Lightyear costume that gave her a panic attack to her standout performances on SNL and Agatha All Along, she has truly come a long way.

People might recognize Sasheer Zamata for several diverse accomplishments. From standup performances, Saturday Night Live, and even the Marvel Cinematic Universe, she’s quite versatile. In fact, you can currently watch her in the Marvel series “Agatha: House of Harkness” if you have a Disney+ subscription. But before all that fame, she was part of the Disney College Program at Disney World. Now, as she revels in the success of “Agatha,” she’s reminiscing about her old job in the parks and sharing an experience in a Buzz Lightyear costume that would instill fear akin to being on the Witches Road.

On KCRW Los Angeles’ radio, the comedian narrated the harrowing experience she lived during her time at the DCP, detailing the entire ordeal.

The experience is somewhat similar to a study abroad program, except it takes place in Florida.

The Disney program is an internship of sorts and hosts many students on an annual basis. She’s probably not alone in the experience of wearing ill-fitting costumes that make it so she can’t showcase Buzz’s best self. Zamata went out regardless, adorned in the oversized costume doing her best but pretty shaken up inside. She went on to say:

Thus, I found myself, amidst the children, visibly emotional as I stamped the books, tears welling up within my costume. Let’s all remember to treat our character performers with kindness.

It’s a great reminder for us all to treat character performers and park staff with respect and awareness, regardless of ticket prices. Hopefully, Zamata had some kindness from the public that day.

It would be fascinating to explore how costumes have evolved over the years and if they cater to individuals of different sizes. Furthermore, given the continual growth of Disney Parks and numerous opportunities for employment via programs such as the Disney College Program, I hope everyone is receiving adequate care and consideration.

Ever since my time at Disney, I’ve been building quite a reputation for myself – and it feels incredible! My standup comedy special, “Sasheer Zamata: The Last Black Unicorn,” is something I’m incredibly proud of. You might have seen me in shows like “The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” or “The Last O.G.” And let’s not forget my stint on the legendary “Saturday Night Live.” Oh, and did I mention that I share an unbreakable bond with the fabulous Nicole Byer from “Nailed It”? We make one heck of a best friend duo, if I do say so myself!

Moreover, the show “Agatha All Along” debuted on September 18th and has been a success according to this year’s television lineup. Sasheer stars as Jennifer Kale, a sorceress and potion specialist who is part of Agatha’s coven, and she’s been shining brightly. In summary, she’s made significant progress since her anxious days as Sasheer in the parks portraying Buzz Lightyear, and I couldn’t be happier to see her in more suitable costumes today.
