As a cinephile who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of sitcoms, I must admit that the news of another Big Bang Theory spinoff has me both excited and cautiously optimistic. Having followed the original series for all 12 seasons and being particularly fond of Stuart Bloom (Kevin Sussman), I’m thrilled to see him getting his own storyline. However, as someone who has witnessed the rise and fall of many a sitcom spinoff, I can’t help but feel a twinge of concern about this new venture.
The popular TV series “The Big Bang Theory” is branching out with another spinoff, focusing on a new set of characters who were previously less prominent in the original CBS sitcom. Originally announced in 2023, this upcoming “Big Bang Theory” sequel from Max will spotlight Kevin Sussman’s character, Stuart Bloom, the comic book store owner, among others. It’s worth noting that co-creator of “The Big Bang Theory”, Chuck Lorre, is set to return as executive producer for this project.
According to Variety, Kevin Sussman, Brian Posehn, and Lauren Lapkus will spearhead an as-yet-unnamed spinoff of “The Big Bang Theory,” streaming on Max. The exact timeline for the series remains uncertain, but it’s clear that it won’t be set in a timeframe significantly before the original show, which aired from 2007 to 2019. Unlike the critically-acclaimed prequel “Young Sheldon,” the next spinoff won’t focus on a younger version of the characters. Instead, it will likely continue the storyline after the events depicted in the final episode of “The Big Bang Theory.
Upcoming episodes of The Big Bang Theory will bring back some beloved characters for dedicated viewers, including Stuart Bloom, portrayed by Sussman, who graced nearly a third of the show’s episodes. Lapkus reprises her role as Denise, the assistant manager in Bloom’s comic book store and his romantic interest during the last two seasons. The humorous Brian Posehn, nominated for an Emmy, once played geologist Bert Kibbler, who at one point had feelings for Amy, portrayed by Bialik.
Could Other Big Bang Theory Characters Return?
In recent sitcom spinoffs, it’s common to see characters from the original franchise making brief appearances. A current instance is the show How I Met Your Father, where Cobie Smulders reprised her role as Robin from How I Met Your Mother. Similarly, Young Sheldon ended with the appearances of Amy Fowler (Mayim Bialik) and Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) from the present day. It’s yet to be seen if any main cast members from The Big Bang Theory, which also starred Johnny Galecki, Kaley Cuoco, Simon Helberg, Kunal Nayyar, and Melissa Rauch, will join the Max show. If Jim Parsons decides to return, it’s possible that the rest of the cast might follow.
Indeed, it’s not just Max’s forthcoming spinoff that will be airing within the Big Bang Theory universe. In fact, another spinoff titled “Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage“, based on beloved characters from the prequel series Young Sheldon, is also set to premiere. The future expansion of this franchise remains to be seen once Max introduces what seems like a continuation of the original series, but one thing is certain – with viewers still eagerly tuning in, it’s likely that the creative minds behind it won’t slow down any time soon. To put it simply, The Big Bang Theory left a significant and lasting impact on television. (Phew! That’s better, right?)
