Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia, who both wrote and directed the movie, has a new 2024 Netflix original titled “The Platform 2.” This film is a sequel to his successful Spanish-language debut, “The Platform,” which depicts a unique prison system – called The Pit – where prisoners are fed from an upper platform that descends daily, leaving only meager supplies for the lower levels. What Happens In The Platform 2 Ending?

In the finale of the 2024 film “The Platform 2”, character Perempuán, portrayed by Milena Smit, suffers a tragic loss – she loses an arm and her companion, Sahabat (Natalia Tena). This occurred due to her actions, including enabling her previous cellmate, Zamatian (Hovik Keuchkerian), to consume excess food from the Platform and orchestrating a revolt against the ruthless leader of the “Loyalists”, Dagin Babi (Óscar Jaenada). A month later, Perempuán teams up with her new cellmate, Trimagasi (Zorion Eguileor), to rally with a group of rebels known as the “Barbarians” against the Loyalists. This new alliance leads Perempuán to prioritize one crucial goal: escape.

According to Sahabat’s mysterious hint, at the end of the month, Woman consumes a portion of a painting depicting a drowning canine, which gives her a lethal dose that makes it seem as if she’s dead when the officials begin moving prisoners and removing the deceased. She regains consciousness, bound among bundles of corpses drifting in weightlessness, and quietly attempts to escape until she identifies a young, innocent boy who has just been imprisoned.

A woman braves danger to guide a boy to the depths of the Pit so an Elevator can carry him upwards. She manages this task but, upon encountering another woman who announces that her voyage has ended, she decides to join the others on the lower level, which appears to be their afterlife.

The credits feature scenes of other adult prisoners, like Goreng (Iván Massagué), echoing Perempuán’s actions by taking children to the base of The Pit. This is a nod back to the ending of the first Platform. The story then continues right where the last movie ended, with Perempuán emerging from the shadows to greet Goreng and inquire, “What brings you here?

The Platform 2 Explains How Anarchy Took Over The Pit

The appearance of Trimagasi, who passed away in The Platform, is the first clue that the sequel is actually a prequel, which is further confirmed by Perempuán’s reunion with Goreng, who also appears to be the former boyfriend she had mentioned. While the new sci-fi movie convincingly passes for a continuation of the 2020 original, it makes even more sense to learn its events take place earlier.

As a devoted admirer, I’d say, “In the opening scenes of ‘The Platform 2’, a rule hidden in the annals of the prison system is subtly unveiled – a rule that ensures each inmate receives an equal portion of food, a concept pioneered by a mysterious, potentially mythical figure known as ‘The Master’. This law was rigorously upheld by powerful figures like Dagin Babi and their legions of loyalists. Yet, the bitter battle between the Loyalists and the Barbarians results in the former’s downfall, leaving this ancient rule a mere memory.

This introduction cleverly sets up a connection to the initial movie, where the residents of the Pit greedily consume as much food from the Platform’s feast as they can, disregarding the importance of fair distribution. Essentially, the Barbarians secured their desire for unlimited eating, but this decision would lead to severe consequences for future prisoners.

A Fight For More Than Food

In “The Platform” movie, the food distribution system symbolized the unbalanced wealth distribution characteristic of a capitalist economy. This theme continues in “The Platform 2“, but it delves deeper into this social commentary through a symbolic centerpoint – the struggle between the Loyalists and the Barbarians.

The Loyalists’ rigorous implementation of fair food rations (even discarding meals meant for deceased high-ranking prisoners) appears oppressive to the Barbarians, particularly when trying a small snack can lead to severe penalties, such as losing a limb or facing harsher punishments. However, given the harsh repercussions they face, it’s not hard to comprehend their motivation for rebellion, as depicted in the original Platform.

What transpires is shockingly brutal but, in essence, is not so different from situations that occur daily in modern democratic societies. This war appears to represent conflicts between those who act in service of their community (the Loyalists) and those who prioritize their own individual freedoms (Barbarians), regardless of its larger ripple effect. For example, the Covid-era debate between those in favor of mask mandates to decrease the virus’ spread and those who feel the mandate was infringing on their rights.

In the context of The Platform 2, it seems that the narrative leans towards the Loyalists’ perspective, even though they have authoritarian policies and our protagonist is involved in a rebellion. However, as I see it, Perempuán doesn’t side with either faction but instead represents another aspect within this film’s central struggle.

Perempuán’s Quest For Redemption

The Second Platform delves into various themes, including the ongoing dispute over personal liberty and extremist religious beliefs. However, fundamentally, it’s a narrative centered around self-forgiveness, which is what Perempuán strives for as she dedicates herself to The Abyss.

In a moment of reflection before her interview, we learn about her past as a thriving artist. She had arranged to meet her ex-boyfriend’s son at an exhibition of her sculpture, which depicted a menacing dog with sharp claws. Despite its risky design, she decided against setting up safety barriers. Tragically, the boy accidentally collided with the installation and suffered fatal injuries from being impaled. This tragic event left her grappling with immense guilt, hoping that a stay in the Pit could bring healing to her troubled heart.

In the end, my opportunity for redemption arrives when I stumble upon a young lad being thrust into the abyss, the Pit. Overwhelmed by compassion, I recklessly abandon my own chance to flee, instead choosing to save him. Alas, this selfless act costs me dearly, as I sustain two grievous head wounds and succumb to the agony of hunger. Yet, in my final moments, I can echo the sentiments of Goreng and those dwelling on the lowest rung – I find peace.

Is it possible that we’ll get another installment of the dystopian movie series known as The Platform 3? At this point, no official announcements have been made. However, given its current popularity, there’s a chance that in the future, additional mysteries and hidden meanings within the Pit could be revealed.
