As a long-time fan of Hollywood, I must say that Sydney Sweeney has certainly made her mark in the industry. The way she handles her fame and public persona is nothing short of impressive. Her recent exchange with the Oregon Ducks mascot during an ESPN broadcast was a perfect example of her quick wit and self-awareness.
It’s no surprise that Sydney Sweeney, at 27, is one of Hollywood’s most coveted stars, and it extends beyond her professional life. She has a devoted fanbase who have shown their admiration for her in various ways, some even getting creative with their expressions. But the attention she received from a college football mascot during an ESPN broadcast might be hard to beat. Yet, Sweeney’s playful response outshone the incident.
On any given Saturday during football season, College GameDay airs on ESPN, and today’s schedule includes an exciting matchup between the Oregon Ducks and the Ohio State Buckeyes. Both teams are undefeated, making for a highly anticipated game. What struck me as amusing was that Oregon’s mascot, “The Duck,” during the broadcast, paid tribute to the actor from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood by holding up a sign saying, “Sydney Sweeney, please call me back.
That’s certainly one way to try and reach a Hollywood A-lister but, of course, there’s no way of telling whether the star will actually receive the message. Well, the “talented, magnetic and beautiful” Sharp Objects actress caught wind of the shoutout. She then took to her Instagram story to share a screenshot of the televised moment, which had a funny message overlaying it. Check it out:
If you were to ask my opinion, coming up with a new phone number is an age-old excuse! In truth, though, I must admit that I find the actress’ humor quite amusing. She demonstrates a keen awareness of her public image, which makes it entirely plausible for her to make light-hearted comments such as this one whenever she’s brought up in conversation. Therefore, her quick wit is not at all unexpected.
The nod of the mascot symbolizes, more than anything else, the profound impact that this Washington native has made in popular culture today. Despite landing roles in series such as “Everything Sucks!” and “The Handmaid’s Tale” towards the end of the 2010s, her rise to fame came when she became part of the cast for “Euphoria.” Since then, she has appeared in numerous films and television shows like “Anyone but You,” “Reality,” “The White Lotus,” and “Immaculate.” Currently, she is preparing to star alongside Ana de Armas in Ron Howard’s Eden and is involved in a boxing biopic about Christy Martin.
Sydney Sweeney acknowledges the progress she’s made in her career, but also confronts the excessive attention paid to her physical attributes. Comments about her body are something she’s had to grapple with, and she continues to find her way through this ongoing conversation. However, Sweeney has expressed body-positive views, urging women to celebrate their sensuality. She further emphasized that women with ample busts should feel empowered to showcase themselves confidently.
It seems to me that the actress playing Madame Web is fantastic at embodying her character and even cracks jokes when she becomes popular. What I’m curious about is whether or not she’ll share a “new contact” with the Duck (I have a feeling the famous mascot might strike out in this situation, though).
On Saturdays between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m., Eastern Time, you can catch ESPN’s College GameDay. If sports aren’t your thing, consider exploring Sydney Sweeney’s performances in Euphoria or The White Lotus with a Max subscription instead.
