James Cameron Convinced JJ Abrams to Cast Zoe Saldana in Her Iconic Star Trek Role

As a devoted fan and admirer of Zoe Saldaña’s illustrious career, I can’t help but marvel at her incredible journey through Hollywood’s sci-fi realm. With her unparalleled talent and knack for choosing groundbreaking projects, she has etched her name in the annals of science fiction history.

In Hollywood, it’s just as much about who you know as what you can do, and Zoe Saldaña knows some incredibly influential people in the sci-fi genre. Saldaña has been involved with some of the biggest sci-fi franchises, including the box-office-breaking Avatar and the MCU’s best trilogy, Guardians of the Galaxy. But, the actress earned her iconic role in Star Trek without even realizing it, thanks to the helpful intervention of sci-fi legend James Cameron. Saldaña worked with Cameron on Avatar, playing the lead Na’vi, Neytiri. Avatar‘s set was visited by many prolific directors, including Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson. But, when J.J. Abrams came on set, he left with Saldaña’s name in mind for the Star Trek universe.

During a Q&A session at the London Film Festival (where MovieWeb was present), Saldaña recollected a significant conversation between James Cameron and J.J. Abrams that ultimately led to her being cast on the Starship Enterprise. In her words, “J.J. Abrams dropped by the Avatar set, and they were conversing.” At that time, she wasn’t aware of what they discussed, but the consequences of their conversation would alter the course of her life forever. Later on, after J.J. Abrams departed from the Avatar set, Saldaña remembered Cameron approaching her and sharing some words that had a profound impact on her career.

“Jim said,
‘I think I just pulled your next job.
Have you ever seen Star Trek?’”

In the Star Trek movie series directed by J.J. Abrams, Saldaña portrayed Lieutenant Uhura. This trilogy boasted a stellar cast that included Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, John Cho, and the late Anton Yelchin. The villains in this series were top-tier, with Benedict Cumberbatch playing Khan in Star Trek: Into Darkness, and Idris Elba portraying Krall in Star Trek Beyond.

Star Trek 4 has gone through various stages of production difficulties since the premiere of Star Trek Beyond. Originally aiming for a December 2023 launch, it encountered multiple creative setbacks and was further affected by simultaneous WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Despite this, the movie remains on Paramount’s future release calendar, but without a confirmed premiere date yet.

It might come as a shock that the main cast from Abrams’ revamped “Star Trek” universe hasn’t been formally announced to reprise their roles yet, even though the project was originally scheduled for release. Actors like Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and others who have served in Starfleet have voiced their eagerness to return to the Starship Enterprise. Zoe Saldana is among those hopeful about “Star Trek 4”. In April of this year, she publicly expressed her aspiration to set foot on the Starship Enterprise once more in the future. She stated:

I remain optimistic. Each time I joined that team, it was an exceptional journey. I understand they’re continually striving to unite everyone, and I’m excited about Paramount’s plans for a revitalized ‘Star Trek.’ It’s a remarkable franchise with a lasting potential. Whether our original remake cast gets another chance, I can’t say, but I fervently wish it so.
