Years After Zoe Saldaña Had A Not-So-Great Experience Working On Pirates Of The Caribbean, She Explained How Steven Spielberg 'Restored' Her Faith In Blockbusters

As a gamer who grew up binge-watching blockbuster movies, I can vividly remember the thrill of seeing Zoe Saldaña grace the screen as a pirate, an alien, or a Vulcan warrior. However, her journey behind the scenes has been as captivating as any movie plot.

Zoe Saldaña has made a name for herself as one of Hollywood’s top actresses, gracing some of the most prominent and successful film series such as Avatar, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Star Trek. However, not all blockbuster ventures have been smooth sailing for her. Following her work on one of the finest movies from the 2000s, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Saldaña has shared behind-the-scenes insights about her Pirates experience, including its demanding nature. She recently disclosed that, despite the difficulties she faced, Steven Spielberg later rekindled her enthusiasm for big-budget productions.

During a chat at the BFI London Film Festival, Zoe Saldaña shared anecdotes about her initial involvement with a big-budget blockbuster in the first “Pirates” movie. She revealed that although the actors and team behind the scenes were exceptional, the management from the studio and producers turned the filming process into a challenging experience for her (as reported by Variety).

Based on my past experiences, I know the type of individuals I prefer to collaborate with, and luckily, most of them are fantastic 99% of the time. However, if the studio, producers, or directors lack empathy and thoughtfulness, even a large production can turn sour quickly, and it’s easy to become overwhelmed. And unfortunately, that happened to me as well.

A leading actress from The Adam Project found her time working on Pirates so challenging that it almost extinguished her enthusiasm for large-scale productions. In a 2022 conversation with Entertainment Weekly, she candidly disclosed feeling overwhelmed during filming and lacking backing from the management team. Several years down the line, Jerry Bruckheimer, the producer, extended his apologies for the hardships she endured on set. However, the aftermath of that experience still resonates with her.

Thankfully, her trust in Hollywood was rekindled when she became part of the ensemble for The Terminal, collaborating with Tom Hanks and Catherine Zeta-Jones under the guidance of director Steven Spielberg. As she looked back, Saldaña mused:

Eight months after our initial collaboration, working with Steven Spielberg once more rekindled my belief that grandeur can indeed embody greatness.

In a reminiscence, the seasoned actor from “Star Trek” spoke fondly of the friendly and innovative vibe the director of “Jaws” brought to the set. In stark contrast to her past encounters where she felt swamped and disenchanted, working on the romantic comedy “The Terminal” was a welcome change of pace. She vividly recalled feeling “extremely good and incredibly secure” during filming. A notable aspect was how the director of “War of the Worlds” would broadcast music over the speakers between takes, fostering a harmonious environment on set and keeping everyone “in sync and on the same wavelength.

It’s great that the meticulous approach and concern for the welfare of his team taken by Steven Spielberg on the set of Colombiana had a lasting effect on its lead actress. In essence, it seemed like he demonstrated that large-scale productions could be both productive and enjoyable. It’s fortunate that Spielberg rekindled the actress’ enthusiasm for filmmaking, an enthusiasm that has continued to delight audiences.

Zoe Saldaña remains a significant player in the film industry, with her latest role appearing in the 2024 movie “Emilia Pérez,” a crime-musical thriller set for release in select cinemas on November 1 before streaming on Netflix. Given her recent projects, it’s clear that her past experiences have influenced her approach to new ventures. Her dedication to collaborating with directors and teams who prioritize respect and kindness is key to her achievements, and this continues to drive her success as she takes on leading roles in major film franchises.

Catch up on some of Zoe Saldaña’s notable performances by streaming her roles in the “Avatar” movies and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including a rewatch of her character in “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.” To see her work with the director of “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” check out “The Terminal” on Netflix.
