Rings Of Power's Markella Kavenagh Told Me Why The Process Of Learning And Revealing That The Stranger Is Gandalf Has Been ‘Really Surreal’

As a die-hard fan of Middle Earth and its enchanting tales, I can hardly contain my excitement as I recount the incredible journey of Markella Kavenagh and her co-star Daniel Weyman on the set of Rings of Power. The anticipation has been building for years, with whispers and speculations about who the mysterious Stranger truly was. But now, with the cat out of the bag, we know that none other than Gandalf himself walked among us in the guise of Weyman’s character!

As a fan eagerly waiting for more from The Rings of Power, I’d recommend catching up on the series before encountering any potential spoilers. Luckily, you can easily stream it with an Amazon Prime subscription to ensure a spoiler-free experience!

In simpler terms, Gandalf, often referred to as The Stranger, encourages his Hobbit companions to trust their intuition. Markella Kavenagh had to rely on this very instinct when trying to uncover The Stranger’s true identity. This is something I’ve discovered after learning the truth about Daniel Weyman’s character, and now, I can share more details about how they revealed and learned his identity from one of his co-stars, who portrays Nori in the story.

Just prior to the release of the final episodes of The Rings of Power‘s second season on the 2024 TV schedule, I had a conversation with Markella Kavenagh regarding her character’s quest this season to aid The Stranger in discovering his name. In the finale, it was revealed that Weyman’s wizard was indeed Gandalf, and much like me, the actress playing Nori expressed great excitement about it.

During our TopMob interview, she shared with me how encountering a character from the renowned “Lord of the Rings” saga felt incredibly unreal.

It’s very exciting. I don’t think it’s quite hit me until now, just how exciting it is that he’s portraying, you know, Gandalf. And the fact that I can even say that, because obviously, it’s something that’s been kind of a secret for so long. So yeah, it feels really surreal.

Kavenagh went on to discuss her reaction when she found out her longtime co-star was portraying Gandalf. She shared that her inner child, or the 8-year-old version of herself, would be astonished to learn she was working on a show featuring a cherished character from “The Lord of the Rings,” and overall, she’s overjoyed by the entire situation.

The young Markella who initially discovered Lord of the Rings within me is utterly astonished by everything, barely able to comprehend it. I find myself continually filled with gratitude and awe, still very much in a state of amazement that I’m privileged enough to be part of this experience.

Following my query about when she discovered her fellow cast member’s character identity on “The Rings of Power,” she shared that she’d been speculating for quite some time. However, it wasn’t until later in the production that she learned he was portraying Gandalf, as she put it.

For a considerable amount of time, starting from our initial rehearsal, I’ve harbored my suspicions. When I inquired about the matter, they deftly steered the conversation away from me. It wasn’t until deep into the filming process for Season 2 that I discovered what was going on. I believe they aimed to keep it as secretive as feasible.

Just as Sauron’s identity was secretive for a prolonged period, The Stranger’s name remained undisclosed for quite some time. This secrecy proved beneficial, as even until the Season 2 finale, The Stranger himself was unaware of his own name. As shared with me by the actress who portrays Nori, she stated:

When the event occurred, it had minimal impact on how we portrayed the characters since both characters were experiencing similar circumstances – X, Y, and Z. Our primary focus was on strengthening their relationship, the bond, and the friendship. This aspect was crucial to us as it formed the core of our storytelling.

In contrast to Charlie Vickers’ character Halbrand appearing as Sauron in Season 1, The Stranger, upon entering Middle-earth, had no clue about his own identity. Thus, on this path of personal exploration, he is gradually transforming into the wizard we are familiar with.

In summary, as widely expected, the disclosure was exhilarating, and now, excitement for Gandalf’s role in Rings of Power Season 3 is growing. Markella Kavenagh shares my eagerness to follow the plot, yet she’s also grappling with the enormity of this development. To emphasize her feelings, she concluded her remarks on the revelation by stating:

Only when I was recently inquired about it did I reply with, “Ah yes, something else is taking place as well. He’s actually portraying a legendary character.

I’m right there with you, as I’m also taking time to absorb everything. I can’t help but be excited to follow along on the journey of Gandalf and Nori’s tales and find out what happens next!

At the conclusion of Season 2, they parted paths, implying fresh journeys for both the sorcerer and the Harfoot. Rest assured, whatever is to come will undoubtedly hold a touch of enchantment.
