Terrifier 3 Wins Weekend Box Office Easily Against Joker: Folie Deux

As an old-school movie aficionado who’s seen his fair share of cinematic triumphs and catastrophes, I must say that this weekend’s box office results have left me utterly bewildered! The horror sequel, “Terrifier 3,” managed to outshine the much-hyped “Joker: Folie à Deux” – a film that boasted big names and even bigger expectations. It’s like watching a clown (Art the Clown, that is) dance circles around the Joker!

In a surprising turn of events, Terrifier 3 outperformed Joker: Folie à Deux at the box office this weekend, which was unexpected given the high anticipation surrounding the latter. After Todd Phillips’ sequel to Joker (2019) debuted in cinemas on October 4, it became clear that unconventional creative decisions had negatively impacted its financial performance. And now, these missteps are taking a toll. The dramatic 81% drop in earnings between the first and second weekends for Folie à Deux paved the way for the “terrifying” horror sequel to secure the top spot with an estimated $18.3 million (according to The Numbers).

Art the Clown (played by David Howard Thornton) not only terrified Arthur Fleck’s (Joaquin Phoenix) upcoming film “Folie à Deux,” but also outperformed all other competitors during the weekend, with very little opposition. Director Damien Leone’s chilling creation in the movie “Terrifier” is now basking in its success as the top-grossing horror flick, having already made more than nine times its initial $2 million budget. Meanwhile, despite being at the number one spot, “Terrifier 3” is enjoying its triumph, while “Joker 2” struggles to maintain control. In fact, the DC Comics movie failed to secure even this weekend’s second place medal.

In a turn of events, “The Wild Robot” earned $13.5 million, placing it at No. 2. Remarkably, this animated film nearly doubled the earnings of “Folie à Deux” during its second week in cinemas. Regrettably for “Joker 2,” Phillips’ movie managed to hold on to the third spot in the Top 5 with a meager $7.055 million, barely edging out “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” ($7.050 million) at No. 4.

Following the steep decline of last week’s top-grossing film, “Joker: Folie à Deux,” to third place, and its persistent struggles at the box office, the fresh entry “Piece by Piece” secured the fifth spot with earnings of $3.8 million this weekend. Four new films managed to break into the Top 10, including “Terrifier 3,” which landed at number 8 with $3 million, “My Hero Academia: You’re Next” at number 8 with $3 million, and “The Apprentice” at number 10 with $1.6 million. Despite the financial success of “We Live in Time,” a new romantic drama starring Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh, director John Crowley’s film performed exceptionally well upon its limited release, marking a significant triumph for the movie.

The movie “We Live in Time” had an extraordinary opening weekend, earning a staggering $45,182 per theater (across 5 venues), more than six times what the top-grossing film of the week, “Terrifier 3,” made in each of its cinemas. The romantic drama featuring Billie Pugh and Charlie Garfield has also been winning over critics with an 81% score on the Tomatometer based on 83 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.

While James McAvoy’s film “Speak No Evil,” produced by Blumhouse and released in 2024, remains popular among viewers, continuing to attract audiences even though it’s accessible for home streaming via VOD. Over the weekend, this chilling remake earned an extra $1.5 million, placing it at number 11. Meanwhile, the timeless classic “The Nightmare Before Christmas” seized the opportunity of the spooky season and made it into the Top 10, earning $2.3 million.

I’m thrilled to be a part of the upcoming October movie releases! The highly-anticipated sequel, Smile 2, directed by Parker Finn, is set to spook us in cinemas this Halloween. Additionally, We Live in Time will have a broader theatrical release on October 18th. Other exciting films joining the lineup include the Michael Keaton-led Goodrich, Ant Timpson’s Bookworm, and Exhibiting Forgiveness from Roadside Attractions, all scheduled to debut as well.
