As a seasoned movie enthusiast who’s been around the block more times than I care to count, I must say that the new Tomb Raider: Legend of Lara Croft animated series has left me absolutely thrilled! With its impressive Rotten Tomatoes score and strong female creative team, it seems like we finally have a Tomb Raider adaptation that does justice to the original video game franchise.

Lara Croft, the iconic British archaeologist, consistently showcases her exceptional intellect and athleticism across various gaming and cinematic appearances. Now, she’s making waves in an animated series, promising a potential goldmine on Netflix with her latest escapade. The new animated series, titled “Tomb Raider: Legend of Lara Croft“, is the latest incarnation of the character, stemming from the popular Tomb Raider game franchise developed by Core Design since 1996. Starring Hayley Atwell, this animated adaptation adheres to the familiar formula beloved by fans while offering a fresh perspective on the traditionally male-oriented video game heroine.

The score on Rotten Tomatoes for the game adaptation Tomb Raider: Legend of Lara Croft signifies its distinctiveness from earlier adaptations. The first film adaptation, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider by Paramount Pictures, which was released in 2001 and starred Angelina Jolie as the character, received a dismal 20% on Rotten Tomatoes and has a similarly poor rating of 5.8 on IMDb. The sequel, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life from 2003, didn’t perform much better, earning a score of only 24%.

2018 saw Warner Bros. unveil a reboot of the beloved Tomb Raider franchise, but its reception wasn’t quite what we hoped for, with a 52% Rotten Tomatoes score and 6.3 on IMDb. However, things are looking much brighter now as the new animated series has managed to raise the bar significantly, boasting a commendable 67% RT score!

The Series Benefits From Being The First Time Tomb Raider Has Been Adapted By A Woman

As a devoted admirer of Lara Croft, I’m thrilled to share that Tomb Raider: Legend of Lara Croft is being brought to life by an exceptional team of women. Producer Shakira Pressley and showrunner Tasha Huo, both ardent Lara Croft fans, are steering the creative direction. The iconic character will be voiced by the brilliant British actress Hayley Atwell.

As Lara Croft’s thrilling escapades originally started in popular video game series, it’s possible that the positive change in reviews might be influenced by the transition from animation to film. In numerous aspects, animation is more suitable for action scenes and intricate settings such as the ruins and tombs Lara explores. It’s simpler to produce special effects in animation, whereas live-action typically involves either CGI effects that could have limited the earlier Tomb Raider films or a substantial budget for practical effects. Consequently, the animated series has an edge over the movies not only due to the medium but also the content it offers.

Though Croft may not be a household name in the live-action world just yet, I’m excited about it! Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the genius behind Fleabag, is all set to produce an upcoming live-action series on Amazon Prime. As another gifted female creator gets a chance to reimagine the renowned video game heroine, I can’t help but feel optimistic for Tomb Raider enthusiasts like myself.
