As a gamer who has spent countless Thursday nights immersed in the world of Grey’s Anatomy since its inception in 2005, I can confidently say that the return of the OG band has brought a nostalgic rush like no other. The chemistry between Meredith, Miranda, and Richard is as palpable as ever, transporting me back to those early seasons when they were the heart and soul of this medical drama.

In the 21st season of “Grey’s Anatomy” set for 2024, we dived straight into Catherine Fox’s villain phase. Debbie Allen’s character has always been bold and assertive, but her excessive firings at the end of Season 20 made many think she truly earned the slap given by Miranda Bailey in the latest season opener. While Allen excels at playing the antagonist, Catherine’s character this season is captivating me for a significant reason: she has reunited the original cast.

Chandra Wilson and James Pickens Jr. have been part of the main cast for every one of Grey’s Anatomy‘s 21 seasons since its debut in 2005, while Ellen Pompeo has remained a regular but reduced her role slightly during Season 19. Recently, due to Catherine’s cancer storyline, these three actors have had more scenes together than usual.

In many hospital scenes, Richard Webber and Miranda Bailey are typically seen mentoring or aiding the junior surgeons. Meredith Gray frequently travels away from Seattle for Alzheimer’s research, but when she discovered Catherine’s kidney tumors, she sought Miranda’s assistance in persuading her to undergo a biopsy.

In the latest episode titled “I Can See Clearly Now,” matters escalated when difficulties in the biopsy procedure forced Richard’s involvement, against Catherine’s express instructions to stay out of it. This unexpected turn led Meredith, Miranda, and Richard to gather around an operating table, stirring a wave of nostalgia as I recalled this iconic trio who have graced some of the most memorable moments on Grey’s Anatomy over the years and have been a staple of my Thursday evenings for more than a decade.

The intrigue in this plot thickens as our original trio must persist with Catherine’s case, but Richard is seething over Meredith hiding a secret from him. The dynamic between Richard and Meredith has always been captivating due to his past romantic connection with her mother. He serves as both a mentor and a parental figure, and moments like these – when the boundaries between her personal loyalty towards him and her professional duties to his spouse become unclear – showcase the actors’ exceptional skills at their finest.

In the early part of Season 21, Catherine’s health issues have given her a bit of a reality check, but I suspect her villainous tendencies are not over yet, especially for those who dislike Debbie Allen’s character or simply can’t stand her. I’m prepared to wager that there will be more instances of her arrogance in the future. However, if this means that we get to see Meredith, Richard, and Miranda collaborating again, as Catherine has rehired Miranda following her dismissal in Season 20 finale, then count me in.

This season, “Grey’s Anatomy” episodes will be shown at a different time, specifically at 10 p.m. Eastern Time on Thursdays on ABC. If you miss it, don’t worry! You can stream it the following day if you have a Hulu subscription.
