Produced by Aaron Spelling, the man behind timeless shows like Beverly Hills, 90210, Dynasty, and Melrose Place, The Love Boat was a massive hit of its time.
The primary shared trait between these two series is undeniably their setting on a cruise ship over water. However, it’s hard not to notice other parallels as well. In essence, “Doctor Odyssey” can be considered a contemporary reinterpretation of the classic “The Love Boat.

Captain Merrill Stubing, played by Gavin MacLeod, serves as the main character, with his crew consisting of others like ship’s doctor Adam “Doc” Bricker (Bernie Kopell), chief purser Burl “Gopher” Smith (Fred Grandy), bartender Isaac Washington (Ted Lange), cruise director Julie McCoy (Lauren Tewes), her sister Judy McCoy, who may soon take over as cruise director, and the captain’s daughter Vicki Stubing, along with ship’s photographer Ashley “Ace” Covington Evans (Ted McGinley).
In each episode of the cruise ship series, you’ll find a mix of different actors who join the cast. The captain, Robert Massey, portrayed by Don Johnson, is nothing short of determined to ensure an unforgettable journey for every passenger. He maintains the rhythm perfectly. And just like in the original, the crew isn’t shy about enjoying their downtime too.
The primary figure is Dr. Max Bankman, played by Joshua Jackson, a fresh medical professional aboard the ship, replacing the previous physician who was dismissed for not identifying an extensive viral outbreak in time before it spread. Max’s team consists of Avery Morgan (Phillipa Soo), a nurse with long-term service, and Tristan Silva (Sean Teale), another veteran nurse, who are hesitant to embrace this good-looking, innovative doctor with his unconventional methods into their established work environment.
Both Share an Anthology Format
This series has a more intimate feel with a compact primary cast, but there’s potential for growth as the story unfolds by introducing new characters. Similar to The Love Boat, each episode centers around a changing group of passengers. Much like the guest star anthology format of that show, many renowned celebrities take on roles in our show. For instance, in the second installment, we encounter a character who’s living it up to a fault – unfortunately, his carefree lifestyle lands him with a sexually transmitted disease. Conversely, another tale revolves around a woman rescued from a lifeboat, mourning the potential demise of her fiancé in a boat fire.
In this rephrased version, the text now reads: The narrative presents uplifting conclusions where injured individuals recover, estranged family members reconcile miraculously, and heroic deeds take place. In the series Doctor Odyssey, multiple storylines unfold concurrently; Captain Robert grapples with mourning his wife’s death, while Nurse Avery aspires for professional growth and harbors a secret affection for Nurse Tristan. To add authenticity to the plot, Max, who was Patient Zero during the COVID-19 pandemic, decides to take on the job after receiving a second chance at life due to his brushes with mortality.
In the series Doctor Odyssey, you won’t find a laugh track, but it does have its amusing instances. However, the overall mood tends to be dramatic rather than comedic. Jackson referred to the show as “Ryan’s imaginative take on a luxury cruise liner.” He added that although the drama can be intense, it occasionally has humorous elements and generally maintains a light and relaxed atmosphere.
