'The King': Lamorne Morris Reveals Why Eddie Murphy Is Worth Obsessing Over, And How It All Connects Back To SNL

As a child of the ’80s and a lifelong comedy enthusiast, I wholeheartedly concur with Lamorne Morris‘ admiration for Eddie Murphy. The man is nothing short of a comic genius, a veritable maestro of mayhem who has left an indelible mark on the genre.

Many stars have made significant contributions to comedy, and Eddie Murphy is undoubtedly one of the most respected in this circle. Since the 80’s, he has been making audiences laugh with his extensive body of work, which has earned him a large fanbase, including fellow comedian Lamorne Morris. In an interview with TopMob, Morris shared his obsession with Murphy and elaborated on why he is worth all the buzz. This admiration stems from Murphy’s time on Saturday Night Live (SNL).

In simpler terms, Lamorne Morris is part of the cast in director Jason Reitman’s new movie, titled “Saturday Night,” set for release in 2024. This film tells the story of the behind-the-scenes turmoil during the initial taping of the famous TV show, Saturday Night Live. During an interview with TopMob, Morris (who portrayed Garrett Morris in the movie) expressed admiration for the actor from “Delirious.” Morris particularly commended one exceptional talent that the Academy Award nominee showcases, which he attributes to the star’s time at Studio 8H, where “Tower Heist” was also filmed.

Eddie Murphy holds the throne as my favorite entertainer; during a period, I couldn’t get enough of his work. His versatility and talent left me in absolute awe. One of my all-time favorite films, The Nutty Professor, showcases his exceptional ability to portray seven distinct characters. Can you imagine? In Coming to America, he plays no less than 100 roles! It takes an incredible amount of energy and skill to pull off something like that in just one day on set. To switch between these roles seamlessly within a single scene demonstrates pure genius. His roots can be traced back to Saturday Night Live, which served as an excellent platform for some of the greatest entertainers ever produced – Eddie Murphy being undoubtedly at the pinnacle of this list.

Being a long-term admirer of the actor who starred in Harlem Nights, I share the views expressed by the actor from Barbershop: The Next Cut. Notably, the former Saturday Night Live actor has an extraordinary talent for immersing himself completely into his characters. What truly sets him apart, however, is his ability to do so flawlessly even within scenes that only involve characters he is portraying. Scenes such as those in the dinner sequences from the Nutty Professor movies demonstrate this skill perfectly. The video clip below includes excerpts from our conversation with Lamorne Morris, and it showcases some of Eddie Murphy’s best films:

Eddie Murphy’s 32 Funniest Lines From His SNL Days

Eddie Murphy is one of the rare Saturday Night Live (SNL) cast members who made a massive impact in under five seasons. Joined the show in 1980, he quickly rose to stardom with the creation of Raheem Abdul Mohammad character. Following this, he played memorable roles like Mr. Robinson, Velvet Jones, and Buckwheat on the well-known TV series. Murphy decided to leave the show in 1984, pursuing a film career, where he achieved considerable success. Nowadays, he is best recognized for his roles in movies such as 48 Hrs., Trading Places, Beverly Hills Cop, Coming to America, Bowfinger, and many others. Murphy considers his most remarkable performances can be found in The Nutty Professor among his extensive body of work.

It should be noted that Lamorne Morris also has been carving out a solid legacy himself. He truly rose to prominence as a cast member on New Girl, the hit Fox sitcom that ran for seven seasons. He’s also notched roles in notable movies and TV shows like Game Night, Yesterday, The Christmas Chronicles, Woke and Unstable. He most recently starred on the fifth season of FX’s crime anthology series Fargo, for which he was the 2024 Emmy winner for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.

To sum it up, I’m delighted to learn that the former BrainRush host cherishes Eddie Murphy as much as I do. Without a doubt, Eddie Murphy is exceptional in the world of comedy and richly deserves the recognition for his remarkable work. I believe many other comedy enthusiasts would echo my sentiment when I say that comedy itself would be impoverished without him.

To catch Eddie Murphy’s performances on Saturday Night Live, you can stream previous episodes with a Peacock subscription. On the other hand, the movie Saturday Night is currently playing in cinemas, so don’t miss out on Lamorne Morris’ portrayal of Garrett Morris (who he isn’t related to).
