Deadpool 3 Editors Explain Why Gambit’s True Ending Was Cut From The Film, And It Actually Makes Sense

As a die-hard Marvel fan who has followed the saga since the early days of Iron Man, I must say that Shawn Levy’s Deadpool & Wolverine has been a rollercoaster ride of emotions. The movie broke records and introduced us to Channing Tatum’s Gambit, a character I’ve longed to see on the big screen.

In a consistently exciting manner, the Marvel Cinematic Universe never fails to deliver fresh content, whether it’s on the big screen or through a Disney+ subscription. The latest box office sensation was Shawn Levy’s Deadpool & Wolverine, which shattered expectations upon its release. The lineup for Deadpool 3 boasted some intriguing characters, including Channing Tatum’s Gambit. Lately, the film’s editor disclosed the reasoning behind why the authentic ending of Gambit was omitted from the movie, and it turns out to be quite plausible.

Following the debut of “Deadpool & Wolverine,” fans were thrilled to catch a sneak peek of Gambit, shared on social media by Ryan Reynolds. This brief appearance sparked excitement among fans, suggesting a possible comeback for Gambit in his X-Men role. However, during an interview with ScreenRant, editor Shane Reid clarified the reasons behind not incorporating this bonus scene into the movie’s main footage. In his own words:

A rhythm to the end credit sequence that we had [was] the Legacy reel [which] was a really important part of the process. It was something that we built, actually, while we were on strike, and that was a sentiment to come off the film with, and then it was from there, we knew that we had this really wonderful mic-drop-coda with Johnny Storm that was going to close the film out. I think the Gambit Sparkle Circle feels like a traditional Marvel coda, and I think what these guys were always trying to do was sort of subvert the audience’s expectations in that sense.

As a gamer, I wasn’t anticipating much from Deadpool & Wolverine’s credits, considering my journey with Marvel movies in sequence. However, what I got was quite different – no hints about upcoming MCU installments or grand cameos. Instead, it was a heartfelt tribute to the crew behind 20th Century Fox’s superhero projects, such as X-Men, Daredevil, Blade, and more. It felt like a fitting farewell for the studio, now owned by Disney for quite some time.

According to these comments, the tribute to Fox was added towards the end of the production process for Deadpool & Wolverine. It appears that this tribute was made due to the WGA and SAG strikes, which temporarily halted work on this highly successful film. Later in the same interview with SR, Reid also discussed how the ending for Gambit was revised. In his own words:

Initially, we had an outstanding asset that was intermittently available. The genius of Ryan, coupled with his marketing and social media acumen, allowed for creative strategies on how to leverage this material effectively and stir curiosity among the audience. However, they also aimed to ensure the final product retained its authentic Deadpool feel, and the ending resonated perfectly, making it seem fitting all along.

The character Gambit, played by Channing Tatum, gained widespread popularity when Deadpool and Wolverine were released in theaters, thanks to his long-standing connection with the role and distinctive accent. Many fans are now eager for him to reprise his iconic X-Man character in a future Marvel film. However, details about Marvel’s plans for mutants, including whether Tatum will be given another opportunity, remain undisclosed at this time.

Currently, Deadpool and Wolverine are playing in cinemas, while Captain America: Brave New World from the Marvel Cinematic Universe will hit the big screen on Valentine’s Day (February 14th). If you’re curious about upcoming movies, here are some release dates for 2025.
