Dwayne Johnson Reveals JJ Abrams Project 'Years in the Making'

Dwayne Johnsonis back to collaborating with major filmmakers, and no, it doesn’t seem to be another generic Netflix action flick. The Rock has revealed that he is teaming up with J.J. Abrams for the first time on an upcoming Film/TV project. TheStar Warsdirector is now working ona top-secret movie starring Glen Powell and Jenna Ortega, but it’s unclear if Johnson’s announcement is referring to that one in particular.

As a seasoned movie enthusiast with over two decades of cinematic experiences under my belt, I can confidently say that the collaboration between Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and J.J. Abrams is shaping up to be a blockbuster event! The fact that this partnership has been in the works for years only intensifies the anticipation.

Johnson unveiled on Instagram a long-awaited project with J.J. Abrams, sharing only minimal details. He hinted at their collaboration by mentioning a dinner they shared and raising a toast together. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson just wrapped up filming for the drama “The Smashing Machine,” directed by Benny Sadie, which may earn him award nominations. However, his upcoming venture with J.J. Abrams could bring him back to the action genre.

After many years of preparation, we finally shared a meal, had some drinks (perhaps I was the only one who got a little tipsy), laughed heartily, discussed various topics such as life, love, and friendship, and took our time delving into our mutual passion for filmmaking and storytelling. In the end, we all raised our glasses in a toast to… indeed, this is going to be an exciting journey!

In his recent post, Johnson hinted that the unnamed project is the brainchild of screenwriter Zak Penn, who has a significant resume. Fans will recognize some of his past works, such as Ready Player One, Free Guy, an early version of The Avengers (which Joss Whedon later revised), and The Last Action Hero from 1993. Penn also contributed substantially to the original Fox Marvel films, including X2: X-Men United and X-Men: The Last Stand. However, it remains unclear whether this is the project Johnson was referring to in his social media update, as Penn may be writing another film directed by Abrams.

Dwayne Johnson & JJ Abrams’ Upcoming Slate of Movies

Dwayne Johnson didn’t manage to reshape the structure of the now-closed DCEU through Black Adam, but that doesn’t mean he’s been lying low. Apart from his comeback to WWE as The Rock over the past two years, Johnson has been quite active with numerous big-screen projects. Following a cameo in Fast X’s end credits, Johnson will spearhead his own Fast & Furious spinoff before headlining the final film of the franchise. He’s also taking on dual roles in Disney’s upcoming Moana films, both the animated sequel and live-action adaptation. Next up, he’ll grace our screens during the holiday season alongside Chris Evans and J.K. Simmons in Red One.

As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I’ve been rather tight-lipped lately regarding my directorial ventures. Despite having numerous Bad Robot-produced films lined up, the movie following my stint with Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker will be an unnamed, top-secret production featuring Powell, Ortega, and potentially Johnson as well. According to TheInSneider, it’s rumored to be a fantasy film that draws inspiration from the 1984 space opera The Last Starfighter, a tale about a video game whiz kid drafted to wage an interstellar war against extraterrestrial foes. If this is accurate, I’m clearly sticking to projects that feel familiar and comfortable for me.
