As a dedicated follower of the world of animation, I must say that Chris Sanders is truly a master of his craft. His ability to weave heartwarming stories like The Wild Robot, with its intriguing blend of technology and nature, is simply astounding.
In an exclusive conversation with TopMob, famous filmmaker and animator Chris Sanders — who’s created features like Lilo and Stitch, The Croods, Mulan, How To Train Your Dragon, and many others — shared insights on his new animated film The Wild Robot.
The film which explores a heartwarming connection between animals and a stranded robot comprises a star-studded ensemble including Pedro Pascal, Bill Nighy, Lupita Nyong’o, Stephanie Hsu, Mark Hamil, and Kit Connor.
When asked about his casting decisions, the filmmaker gave credit to the project’s casting director Christi Soper. “Sometimes I think casting directors don’t get enough credit,” he said. “This is something I’m no good at and Christi is a genius,” he added. Sanders further elaborated on how Soper started the casting process.
In a clear and descriptive manner, Sanders ensures that his writings convey the essence of the characters and their needs. From her careful observations, Soper proposes suggestions.
In simpler terms, “He noted that she correctly identifies the characters, pairs them with the appropriate actors and their voices. Thus, all praise goes to her.” Furthermore, it turned out that their initial selection for each character agreed to participate in the project.
In a recent update, Sanders mentioned that they gather fragments of dialogue from past projects to match with their character designs. This isn’t primarily to ensure the accuracy of the dialogue, but rather to guarantee that the character design suits the appropriate tone or style suggested by the dialogue.
The Wild Robot centers around a clever robot named Roz, who gets stranded on an uninhabited island following a disastrous shipwreck. According to the summary, to make it through the challenging terrain, Roz forms connections with the island’s wildlife and takes charge of an abandoned baby goose. Classified as a family-oriented adventure, this film promises to be a stirring emotional journey as a mechanical robot learns and experiences fresh emotions.
The Wild Robot will hit the theaters on October 18 and later stream on Netflix.
